Weekly Newsletter 4 November 2013
The weather just keeps on delivering for our club races, with yet another race down in near-perfect conditions. We certainly are spoilt triathletes here on the Coffs Coast.
Sunday’s triple sprint brought 93 members to the Jetty Foreshore to race their choice of 1, 2 or 3 laps of the 300m swim/6km cycle/2km run. Lachlan Binet was fastest overall by almost 2mins, with Andrew Pitzen and Eddie Harrod coming in close together to take out 2nd & 3rd.
This format is all about pacing, and it looks like Phil Viles was the only person to get faster with each lap. Although Jake Saunders showed some pretty sensible pacing as well, managing to do each lap in about 29mins each. Ellie Luhr and Jayde Viles showed tenacity and dedication in their respective races. Now that she is a little more experienced in triathlon, Brianna Rooney demonstrated some impressive potential and what promises to develop into a killer run leg.
Thanks to our members on duty for making the day run so smoothly, especially . And a big thanks to our sponsors, The Happy Frog & Harbourside Markets, McCarthy Consulting Group and Woodsey’s Wheels for their support.
Also experiencing fantastic race conditions, many of our members travelled to Noosa to participate in Australia’s most famous multisport festival.
Emma Moffatt showed why she has been a world class triathlete for so long, taking out the female elite category in 1:58:41. Emma swears her speed had nothing to do with the scare from a water snake prior to the swim start! Aaron Royle, who is on the verge of big things, won the male elite category in 1:46:11. Royle was the 2012 under 23-world champion and is currently our leading Australian male triathlete. Both Emma and Aaron are the only 2 athletes guaranteed a spot on the team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Congratulations to both Emma & Aaron.
Daniel Stein and Richard Pearson both competed in the Elite category and both had solid race performances. Daniel came in 22nd overall in 01:57:46 and Richard finished 25th with a time of 01:58:02.
Lots of CHTC members had a great race and there were some seriously slick times.

2013 VENTOUX CYCLES JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP
A reminder to all juniors that the closing date for this scholarship is soon approaching. Any juniors who wish to apply need to have their application submitted by 8 December 2013. Last year’s winner, Kalina Bennett, said that the scholarship was a fantastic opportunity for her to develop her talent and she would “encourage everyone eligible to apply. It’s been such a great opportunity and lots of fun along the way”.
If you are interested, then complete the attached application form and hand it to a committee member before 8 December.
The selection criteria are:
In what is to be a great boost for triathlon, Prime7 and 7Mate have signed a 3 year agreement to broadcast various Ironman events, as well as the Noosa Triathlon. Races to be included in the broadcast deal are:
Triathlon is rapidly becoming less of a fringe sport, and this broadcast agreement is a testament to its increasing popularity. The ITU World Triathlon series is already broadcast on ONE and makes for fantastic couch-fed motivation. These additional broadcasts will be a welcome source to feed healthy triathlon addictions on rest and taper days!
HELL OF THE WEST
Ho hum. Another lovely triathlon in a spectacular coastal venue with breathtaking views and pristine waters. What’s that you say? You’re bored with the same old coastal triathlon venues and want something different? Well, then you need to check out the Hell of the West in Goondiwindi.
To quote its website, www.hellofthewest.com, Hell of the West “is one of Australia’s toughest & most challenging races. Not for the faint hearted it is a 2KM Swim, 80 KM Bike Ride, 20 KM Run in the murky waters of the Macintyre River and the blazing heat of the Goondiwindi summer!”
If that’s gets you saying “bring it on” then you need to contact Andrew Rowlings. Andrew and other CHTC members raced Hell of the West last year and rave about it as a well-organised, fantastic race in brilliant location. This season’s race will be held on Sunday 2 February 2014 and in anticipation of a large CHTC contingent heading west, Andrew has booked several rooms at the Border Town Motel. There are still 2 rooms left – one double and one triple. The motel is in walking distance to the race venue and not far from the Goondiwindi watering holes for that all-important post-race celebration.
Rooms will be given on a first-come first-served basis, and Andrew is also happy to discuss transport or carpooling options.
If you are interested, please contact Andrew Rowlings on 0434718274 or email@example.com.
CHICKS & BIKES
Ladies! Fear bike maintenance no longer!!
Al and the team from Ventoux Cycles are putting on a “Chicks and Bikes” afternoon to teach ladies the basics when it comes to tyre changing, equipment etc.
The session will be held on 16th November 2013 from 4pm to 6pm in the downstairs training room at the Coffs Harbour Yacht Club. There is a limit of 20 participants. There will be no charge but you might want to buy the boys a beer afterwards. It will be a good chance to meet new and old members.
If you are interested, please contact Vicky Tillott on 0408013 862 ASAP.
