We have only 2 more races before Christmas and Sunday’s race will be the last one of the year in the usual format. It’s a good chance to set your PB for the year, or just earn those extra calories at the Christmas party! Our timeframe is as usual – racked and ready by 6:15am, race briefing at 6:20am and scratch starts at 6:30am. Weather conditions have been such a mixed bag of late, and are always hard to guarantee this far out from the day, but we can be assured that it will be hot and humid. Be ready to sweat and ensure you have plenty of electrolytes not just on the day of the race, but also in the days leading up to Sunday. Winds will be lighter in the morning, and picking up later in the day. Some are predicting rain & thunderstorms, others not. But be prepared for wet weather just in case. Don’t forget to check the Duty Roster at http://www.coffstri.com/duty-roster.html. All those on duty, please be there by 5:45am and don’t forget to sign on. Have a great race and see you on the course! JUNIORS AWAY RACE Those juniors who have expressed interest in heading to Robina for the away race on 18th January are urged to get to Sunday’s club race a little earlier than normal. From 6am there will be a brief get-together for the athletes and their parents, where initial costings and timetable will be available. This is an opportunity to ask anything that may be concerning you, and to get final facts prior to making a 100% commitment. Should you have any queries prior to that, please direct them to [email protected] and Andrew Rowlings will respond ASAP. Just as a reminder, the current plan is to leave Coffs on Saturday morning and head to Robina for your optional 500m or 1500m open water swim early in the afternoon. We will then stay overnight before participating in the sprint or enticer race on Sunday. We will head home following presentations, and should be back in Coffs between 5-6pm. REECE’S 15 MINUTES Just like to share with you this fantastic race photo of Reece Edwards which was included in a race report on www.slowtwitch.com about the Challenge 70.3 Laguna Phuket race on the weekend. CLICK HERE and scroll down. Reece competed as a professional and came in 12th overall. This was in a very competitive field that included a very much in form Ruedi Wild, Frederik Croneborg and Luke McKenzie. He put in a very impressive time of 4:31:27 (00:28:14/2:29:27/1:31:17) in very testing conditions with 42 degree heat, 90% humidity and not a breath of wind. He was, however, chicked by Mel Hauschildt! Congratulations Reece. Enjoy your 15 minutes on slowtwitch! GEL COMPARISONS Sending time testing gels, comparing their ingredients and nutritional value can be very time consuming and involve a lot of hazards as part of the trial and error process. www.fellrnr.com has created a fantastic wiki resource that compares gels. It’s very comprehensive and includes a brilliant table to compare gels at a glance. There are also reviews and pictures of the gels. While this is an American website, it includes details of many products widely available in Australia and also many available through overseas online stores. You can find the gel comparison table http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Comparison_of_Energy_Gels. The fellrnr site also has a nifty VDOT calculator to calculate your VO2max, predict race times and running economy. CLICK HERE to check out the calculator. It delivers extensive data to ponder. Happy testing! ONES FOR THE CALENDAR
WISE WORDS “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, “Wow, what a ride!”" - from the book Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner by Dean Karnazes
