Weekly newsletter 17 march 2015

BACK ON COURSE
It feels like an age since the last club race and so much has happened in the meantime. No doubt members are champing at the bit to get out racing again, keen to show off their speed over the sprint and enticer distances.

It will be business as usual on Sunday 22nd March, with our last race in daylight savings time (NB: daylight savings finishes at 3am on Sunday 5th April). Official sunrise won’t be until 6:52am, so it might be a good idea to bring a torch along so you can see while you’re setting up your transition area. It’s starting to get a little crisp in the mornings as well, so please ensure you are rugged up if you feel the cold.

The swim could be a little on the short side, with low tide at 4:23am, so the tide will only just be starting to come back in when we start at 6:30am. The water has been clear and warm lately, so be prepared for a possible wetsuit ban, but in beautifully clear water. As for the skies, rain is predicted so please also be prepared for potentially wet race. As always, please check the weather conditions closer to race day. 
Please don’t forget that the start time for the Enticer event will now be one minute after the last 25 minute handicapper starts, ie 26 minutes after the start of the long course race.

The committee has made this decision to split the start primarily to ease congestion during the swim leg and have everyone finish the event closer to the same time. Note that registration will still close at 6:20 am for both events as usual. There will be a slight change to the enticer swim course that will be explained on the day. The swim course for the long event will not change.

COFFS OCEAN SWIMS
Hopefully those beautiful swim conditions will stick around until the Coffs Ocean Swims on 29th March. The good folk at Village Sports have been working hard to bring you this event, now in its 17th year.  It is always a good day, with a 600m and a 2km swim as well 150m and 300m junior swims for 8-10 years and 11-14 year olds.

PROTECTING THE INTEGRITY OF OUR SPORT
As members of Triathlon NSW and Triathlon Australia, you have no doubt received the email from Anne Gripper, CEO of Triathlon Australia, regarding the strategies they are implementing to ensure that triathlon remains a clean sport with a high level of integrity.

First and foremost, to help ensure that doping is not occurring in triathlon, we will be commencing anti-doping testing on age group athletes at several events this year.  They started by collecting blood and urine samples at the Mooloolaba Triathlon on the weekend, and at the IRONMAN Asia Pacific Championships in Melbourne next weekend.

All competitors in sanctioned triathlon events are subject to the Triathlon Australia Anti-Doping Policy and are therefore eligible to be selected for a blood or urine test. Your obligation as a competitor is simple – do not take banned performance enhancing substances.  If you are unsure about the status of a substance or medication, it is important that you check it.  The easiest way of doing this is through the ASADA “Check your Substance” service which can be accessed from the ASADA website or by calling  1300 027 232.

If you are taking medication for a legitimate medical condition, it is possible to request a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).  Details of this process are available on the ASADA website. If you would like to know more about how the testing process works or other aspects of anti-doping in Australia, the ASADA on-line education program is excellent.  You can access it from the ASADA website too.

If you become aware of any behaviour or attitudes which you believe compromise the integrity of our sport, we strongly encourage you to provide information on these matters. You can do this confidentially and anonymously.  We have contracted an independent organisation called Stopline to provide a confidential information provision (whistleblowing) service to triathlon.  Even if you are unsure about your concerns, or you are confused about someone’s behaviour, you can call Stopline to discuss what you have seen or heard.  Information about any type of integrity issue can be provided and / or discussed with Stopline by calling 1300 30 45 50 or by sending an email to triathlonaustralia@stopline.com.au. If your concerns are specifically about doping, it is best to call the ASADA Stamp Out Doping Hotline on 13 000 27232.

AN INTERNATIONAL WINNER

CHTC member Leah Fitzgerald competed in the Hilo Marathon (aka Big Island International Marathon) in Hilo, Hawaii on the weekend.

Leah was the first female over the line and 5th overall in an incredible time of 3:05. She also set a new female course record!!! Incredible, amazing & inspiring. Congratulations Leah. We are so proud of your achievement.

And thanks for flying the bcu Coffs Tri flag/towel after your win! Well done!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS ENTRIES NOW OPEN
Registrations are now open for the 2015 Club Championships in Forster. We are so excited about this year’s event and are hoping that everyone will participate either racing or as a volunteer to help us win CLUB OF THE YEAR!

The club is providing a generous accommodation package ($80 for two nights) and it is expected that anyone who takes advantage of this enrols as an athlete or volunteer.  Updated information about the weekend is in the attached information sheet.

WATERWORLD GREAT OCEAN RUN – RACE REPORT

6:15am, Sunday 15 March 2015, I’m standing on the beach at Red Rock. It’s cold (in my singlet) and the only familiar face I see is the old war horse himself, Peter Wood. The sand is soo soft and I’m thinking to myself “Why are you doing this?”. Then, I see another much more familiar face, the one and only “Rocket” Rod Koopmans and he looks pumped! Nerves settled with a bit of idle chit chat and the obligatory (stainless) Steel pre-race brief (you know, the bit where he tells you the course and how well sign posted it is...) and just like that, we’re off.

Editor’s note: I was given the unenviable task of trying to cull Ed’s story. I must admit I failed. It was just too good a read in its entirety! The full story is in the attached PDF document and well worth the read. Congratulations Ed. A great win, and a great story.
