10/12/2013 0 Comments Weekly Newsletter 9 December 2013RACE RULES A firm reminder to all club members that they must be aware of the rules of triathlon. The full Race Competition rules can be found at http://www.triathlon.org.au/Assets/Triathlon+Australia+Digital+Assets/Resources/Technical/August+2013/TA++RCR+July+2013.pdf. This has come to light after a complaint at the last club race of competitors littering on the course. Gel wrappers were observed dropped on the course. While the culprit was not caught in the act in this instance, all members need to be aware that this is not acceptable behaviour at any time and can result in a penalty. Specifically, dropping gel wrappers (or any piece of equipment) is a breach of rule 1.1 (m) Competitors must not discard any equipment on the course, except at the approved dedicated locations. The penalty is usually a 3 minute time penalty but can be a stop and go penalty or even a red card (disqualification), depending on the competitor’s interaction with the Technical Official. Similarly, club members are emphatically reminded that spitting on the course, particularly in high traffic public areas such as the Jetty, is completely unacceptable. Rule 1.1 (k) Competitors must not obstruct or interfere with the forward progress of another competitor, or jeopardise the safety and welfare of another competitor or race official or spectator or member of the public.
Apart from being a breach of Triathlon Australia rules, these behaviours are also detrimental to our goodwill from Coffs Harbour Council and the general public. Our ability to use local roads and public spaces for our regular races is reliant upon this goodwill and incidents such as these can cause irreparable damage and possibly cause the termination of club races altogether. While it is understandable that many members use club races to practice nutrition strategies for longer distances or other races, the general consensus is that use of gels, etc is not necessary for a race under 1.5 hours duration. There is a wealth of information available online at website such as http://firstoffthebike.com/tri101/?tag=nutrition or http://triathlon.competitor.com/category/nutrition. Club Sponsor, Louise Williams is a practicing Sports Nutritionist at Coffs Coast Sport Nutrition and can provide thorough advice on nutritional requirements for triathletes. You can find Louise’s contact details at http://www.coffscoastnutrition.com.au/. Our club coaches Andrew Rowlings and Phil Benoit can also be consulted if you need advice. CHALLENGE FORSTER – THANK YOU CHTC CHTC has received the following note from the organiser of Challenge Forster Triathlon 2013. Challenge has donated $650 to the Club in recognition of the efforts of these volunteers. So a big thank you goes out to the members mentioned, and a big thanks to Challenge for not only staging the event but also for recognising the work of these CHTC members who gave their time to make the event a success. “Just a short note to recognize some exceptionally dedicated members and supporters of members who chose to beneficially volunteer at Challenge Forster Triathlon 2013 on behalf of the Coffs Harbour Tri Club. We had Alison Pattinson, Ellie Luhr, Sue Clarke, J Formann (Sue Clarke’s Mum), Rebecca, Lee, Josiah and Z Varney. This event would not have been successful without their enduring commitment throughout not only race day but the days leading up to the event including competitor bag prep, aid station set up & captainship, recovery set up, even going to collect oil the masseuses forgot to bring and well and truly going the extra mile all doing 8+ hours on race day. Participation for this year’s event far exceeded expectations despite the very trying weather conditions, and the entire Elite Energy crew are looking forward to returning with a bigger and better event next year. Many of the athletes have commented to us on the fantastic efforts of the dedicated volunteers and have given feedback on the welcoming, encouraging atmosphere that they all helped to provide. Elite Energy is dedicated to contributing to involved community groups by assisting with their fundraising efforts and the success of our events would not be possible without the continued support of members and member supporters of organisations like the Coffs Harbour Tri Club. Please pass on our thanks to the above mentioned for making themselves available for this event. We hope to see them all again at next year’s Challenge Forster on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November 2014. We truly appreciate their efforts, dedication and contribution of time. This is the second year for the triathlon and last year’s inaugural event was a great success despite some pretty ordinary weather conditions. The Triathlon will be held on Saturday 1st March and Sunday 2nd March 2014 at the Jetty Foreshores. Registrations are now open at www.villagesports.com.au. The event includes Kids Races (for ages 5-13) and an Enticer Tri (375m/10k/2.5k) on Saturday afternoon with the Olympic Distance Tri (1.5k/40k/10k) on Sunday morning. If you need some motivation watch the 2013 highlights Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-iHXnwcKSI. SOUTH WEST ROCKS TRIATHLON If you need a primer for the bcu Coffs Tri, then have a go at the Trial Bay Triathlon. CHTC has a history of strong participation in this race and has taken out the club trophy on several occasions. This will be a special running of the Triathlon, with 2014 being the Silver Anniversary of the Senior Triathlon. To be held on Sunday 16th February 2014, the event will keep its 500m swim/26km cycle/6km run format. Participants will receive a special anniversary finisher’s medal and t-shirt.
