4/11/2014 0 Comments Weekly Newsletter 4 November 2014TRIPLE SPRINT Our next race on 9 November is our annual triple sprint race. This is always an interesting event to see who can keep up the same consistent pace for all three. For those who haven’t done it before, or those who would rather forget, the format is 250m swim, 7km cycle, 2km run done as three consecutive super sprint triathlons. You can choose to do one, two or all three laps. Just be sure to notify the timekeepers if you finish early. It’s always a test of transition times and techniques, as well as shock to those arms & shoulders when they hit the water for the second lap after a 2km run. You will have to plan out how you will conduct each transition in each lap. It might pay to remember that it can be really tricky to put on a wet swimming cap while running down to the beach. You might want to consider leaving the wetsuit at home as well. We will be starting at the usual time of 6:30am sharp, with race briefing at 6:20am. Please ensure you are racked, registered and ready to go by 6:15am. The BOM is forecasting a mostly sunny day with a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 27 degrees. There may also be some light NE winds about. We will once again be swimming on the incoming tide, with high tide at 10:36am and smooth conditions predicted. Perfect race conditions once again. ORIENTEERING Bush & Beach Orienteering Club invite all members of CHTC, and anyone else who might be interested to come & join them in their Twilight Orienteering Summer Series. All levels and abilities are welcome to participate. The series are casual and family-friendly events held each Wednesday evening from November until January. The venue will change from week to week. Each event generally involves road running and could make a nice change to your usual “pound the pavement” run training. For more information, please see the attached flyer or contact Helen on 0478 226 601 or [email protected]. Or find them on Facebook HERE. RACE AROUND THE RIVER "The Brian Cockbain Memorial Ride Around the River" (RATR for short) will this year form part of the Nambucca River Festival. The festival was run for the first time last year and was a big hit and has grown to incorporate several other events this year. The Festival is on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November and is a Rotary event. Macksville Amateur Cycle Club is working with the Festival Committee to run the RATR. The ride will be on Sunday morning (30 Nov) starting at 9am and there will be a 50km ride and a 25km ride. Additionally, the organisers are planning a kids under 12 ride on Saturday morning. The ride sample bag will contain (among other things) a tee shirt (valued at $17.95) and an entry wristband (priced at $10) that enable people who register for the ride entry to the Festival at any time over the two days. The cost to register is $40. Riders will be able to register for the RATR on Saturday to enable them to get good value from their Festival entry wristband - Saturday afternoon and evening is a highlight of the Festival. For details go to www.nambuccariverfestival.com.au, and select the RATR page from the dropdown menu under Associated Events. From that page you can find a separate RATR webpage and the RATR Facebook Group links. JOHN MACLEAN RETURNS TO THE NEPEAN TRIATHLON WITHOUT HIS WHEELCHAIR Reprinted from Trizone.com.au “In one of the most amazing scenes that has taken place in the Australian triathlon scene John Maclean raced the Atmoshpere Nepean Triathlon without his wheelchair. Like the Pied Piper the people started to amass behind John and walk with him as he undertook a 26 year dream. When John stopped to have some water or adjust his equipment the crowd continually fell silent. It was surreal. The support of some sporting greats like Steve Waugh and Phil Kearns along with everyone else that has been involved with John’s journey and other supporters who were coming to be involved in a part of triathlon history was amazing. After 26 years of racing triathlons in a wheelchair John Maclean has completed the triathlon that he was training for when he had his ill fated accident while training for this race over 26 years ago. Last year in Kona I spent a few nights with John Maclean at the Outback Steakhouse after we discovered that it was the only place you could get some steamed vegetables and a good piece of steak without any UFOs (Unidentified Food Objects) that you tend to get in the good old USA. Along with Darryl Griffiths, Andy Scott and Christie Sym we ate there most nights. John told of what he was undertaking and showed us some video footage on his iPhone of the work he was doing with Ken Ware. Fast forward 12 months and we were witnessing first hand John doing a triathlon without his wheelchair. This was amazing and incredible stuff. History was being made as we watched on of the most admired guys in the sport realise his dream of once again being an able bodied triathlete.” See the full article and related video at http://www.trizone.com.au/20141026/john-maclean-returns-to-the-nepean-triathlon-without-his-wheelchair/.
