Congratulations to Kath Porter, John Daffy and Andrew Rowlings. All three have been tireless workers for the club and have contributed in building the CHTC into what it is today. Long Distance World Titles The ITU Long Distance World Championships returned to France after a six-year absence on Saturday 1 June as Belfort welcomed some of the world’s best athletes battling it out for glory. The race which was to consist of 4km swim, 120km cycle and a run of 30km. However due to unforeseen cold weather and low water temperatures the 2013 world titles were decided over a 9.5km run, 87km bike, 20km run duathlon, as opposed to the original triathlon course proposed. While the circumstances were unfortunate, athlete safety was the top priority. Men’s world title went to Bertrand Billard of France in a time of 4:08:45. In the women’s race Australia’s Melissa Hauschidt came from behind to take another world title. CHTC member Kristian Parkhill, although disappointed his favourite legs were deleted and shortened represented his country and club with pride as he crossed the line in 5:55:05. We are all proud of you Kristian. Team Coffs Cardiology Well the boys left our shores last week and headed to their training base at high altitude in Lake Tahoe. While their bodies have had to adjust to crisp temperatures and reduced oxygen levels while training, they have settled in well. Over the past weekend they all headed down to sea level, where the temperature was above 30 and a lot easier to breath. The local triathlon scene didn’t know what hit them – Reece Edwards competed in the duathlon which he won, while Richard Pearson and Andrew Rowlings completed the short course race of 800m swim, 26km bike, 5km run in which they took first and second outright. Sunday was the Olympic distance race and Dan Steins turn to shine as he also took line honours. A great start to the trip boys and well done. Pictures are available on the Team Coffs Cardiology facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/TeamCoffsCardiology?fref=ts Wednesday Run Training Andrew Pitzen will be conducting the Wednesday morning run session whilst Andrew Rowlings is away. Club coach Rowlings has set the program's for the next 8 weeks which also includes wet weather options in case of rain. Meet at Fitzroy oval next to pool at 6am. Session duration is 1 hour and costs $2 per person Cairns Ironman and 70.3 Set in one of the world's most iconic tropical locations, IRONMAN and Ironman 70.3 Cairns will take place this Sunday. It will feature a course memorable for the 3.8 / 1.9km swim in the warm waters of Tropical North Queensland, the 180/ 90km bike leg that travels up arguably the most scenic coastal roads in Australia towards Port Douglas and a 42.2 / 21.1km run that includes the Cairns boardwalk before finishing in the heart of the city of Cairns. CHTC has 3 members in the ironman while 2 members will compete in the 70.3 race. Sinclair Black # 685 - Sinclair’s training had a late start due to his BCU Tri commitments, however once time became available Sinclair concentrated on his running to ensure he finishes off his customary strong swim and cycle legs in style, hopes to better the 12 hr mark in his second tilt at this race. Peter Wood # 1336 - Mr Wood, who has the most Ironman finishers medals in our club again lines up for ironman number 28 (I think) has even been see out training on several occasions. Peter seems to have recovered well from surgery back in Feb and the Port Ironman in early May. Peter will be out to bet long time training partner Cec Tempone and may surprise us all with a fast time. Cec Tempone # 1398 - Cec is out to have the race of his life this weekend and intends to push hard to stay in front of Peter Woods out of the water. Once on the bike Cec’s consistent training will kick in and see him home in a close to PB time. 70.3 Starters Michelle Clarke # 2573 - Michelle is out to test herself over this distance in a full on race for the first time, Michelle has set her goals for a big day and after 5 months of solid training is in tip top shape. No doubt Michelle will cross the line with a huge smile. Marg Gill # 2664 - Marg has experience over this distance albeit several years back. Marg has put in the hard yards during training and will reap the rewards on race day. We wish them all well. In what is known as the toughest day in sport. You can follow their progress on “ironman live MEET Sinclair Black I had the chance to put a few questions to him prior to his 2nd Ironman in Cairns this weekend… How long have you been competing? I did my first Tri at Noosa in 2005 and have done it every year since. I joined the Coffs Tri Club in 2008. This will be my 2nd Ironman and I've also done a couple of half IMs. What got you started? I was way overweight (108kg) and was travelling a lot with work and did a little bit of cycling, In 2004 I was visiting a friend living in Noosa and the Triathlon Festival was on and I said to him let's do this next year. We both stuck to our word and turned up in 2005 and gave it a go. I just loved the day and everyone was so friendly and encouraging and I'll be doing my 9th one this year. What was your sporting background? Anything to do with the water, Surfing, SUP, Surf boats, Ocean Swims, Board and Ski Paddling and then a bit later I started cycling. With Ironman Cairns next week, what are your expectations? To finish (maybe under 12 hours would be nice!) How has your lead up been? Started a bit later as I was really busy until the end of the bcu Coffs Tri. Andrew did a program around my weakness which is running, Last year I was very Swim and Cycling fit but just did enough running to finish the race. This year it's been more about the run, I have been doing a lot of bricks and a lot more running since March and only a little bit of Swimming up until May. What is your favourite training session? I did a 3km swim in the Harbour last week and it was the first time I have put the wetsuit on since I started training. The Harbour was perfect, not a breath of wind, water was glassy, crystal clear (amazing) and lots of fish and turtles. The afternoon light was incredible and it was just one of those sessions I will remember and with the wetsuit on I just flew!!!! There is something about a good swim that makes you feel great all day when you get out of the water. What is your least favoured session? Cold mornings on the bike at Bucca!!! What do you see as your strengths in the sport? It would have to be swimming, I am very lucky that I don't have to do a lot of swimming training to stay with the leaders in my age group. The only down side is that for the rest of the race everyone passes you and a lot of the fast guys are surprised that they have not passed you already say "good effort big fella" or look at you thinking what's this guys doing here, did he go around all the buoys? Do you have any pre-race rituals? I always like to watch the water of the swim leg the day before around the same time of the race to see what the currents are doing and then jump in and test the water, familiarise myself with where the buoys are and maybe make a few landmark bearings. I like being at the front of a swim pack as I can't rely on just following people. What will you eat for dinner the night before your race? Not a lot, maybe a light chicken meal with a few veggies and brown rice. I will though for Lunch the day before have a large pasta meal and steak the night before that. What is your breakfast pre-race? Toast with Honey or Vegemite, energy bar and a gel just before the race Note: Next week’s newsletter maybe a day or two late. Wise Words Listen to your body and rest when it tells you to rest.
