Weekly Newsletter 31 March 2014

The list of allocations will be sent to both of the accommodation venues.  For those staying at the Forster Holiday Village, the office closes at 5pm. If you are arriving later than that please ring 6554 6027 to be given a code to access the safe at the front of the office. You will be able to collect your room key in an envelope from there.

As for the race itself, Club Coach Andrew Rowlings has some sage advice to offer.

PM RACE START
By Andrew Rowlings
With Club Championships at Forster on Saturday not getting underway until early afternoon, club members need to alter their usual pre-race ritual in order to ensure they are fuelled and ready to go.

For some the afternoon start is a luxury, giving them a sleep in and ample opportunity to top up the energy levels through optimum fuelling options.

Others will suffer from nerves and limit their opportunities to take on sufficient calories to ensure their glycogen stores are topped up when the gun goes off.

Competitors should aim to have their normal everyday breakfast, followed up with a late morning snack which is low fat and carbohydrate rich.

Top up with regular electrolyte drink, energy bars and water until your race gets underway.

Just because an afternoon race is different, it does not necessarily mean your inability to follow a regular pattern will have a negative impact on your performance. Instead, look at it as an opportunity to experiment with a completely different lead up that could potentially enable you to ensure you are 100% fuelled and ready to go.

Whatever your preference, get ready for a warm afternoon with Forster expected to reach 26 degrees. A light southerly will help to keep you cool, but on-course hydration will be priority, especially if you expect to be racing for more than 100 minutes.

Good luck to all, let’s give those big city clubs something to think about!

UNIFORMS
There has been a delay with our uniforms, which unfortunately meant that they were only dispatched today.  Fingers crossed they will arrive before the weekend.  Michelle Clarke will email/message everyone when they come.

If they arrive on Friday she will take them down to Club Champs for people to wear.

The issue was at the factory and had to do with availability of the fabric. It was completely out of the control of Michelle or Brad from BTR Carbon Tech (our supplier). They both apologize and are fully aware of how disappointing this is.

Thanks Michelle for all your work in organising the uniforms.

RULE OF THE WEEK
Although a fun event to race, Club Championships this weekend is very serious and there will be absolutely no lapse in the rules. We really don’t want to see any of our members in the penalty box. So just to be sure everyone is well aware of the drafting rules, we will go over them again once more. Please ensure you are very familiar with this rule, as this is one that is most commonly breached.

Rule 3.11   Drafting
a.            The draft zone of a competitor may not overlap the draft zone of another competitor or motorcycle or vehicle except in the following circumstances:

(i)           When the competitor is in the process of legally passing another competitor or motorcycle or vehicle;

(ii)          For safety reasons;

(iii)         For an aid station;

(iv)         For entrance to or departure from a transition area; and

(v)          In making an acute turn.

b.            When passing a forward competitor or motorcycle, the rear competitor is allowed a maximum of 15 seconds to pass through the 7 meter draft zone and 25 seconds to pass through the 12 meter draft zone. Failure to observe this may result in a drafting penalty.

c.             When passing a forward vehicle, the rear competitor is allowed a maximum of 90 seconds to pass through the draft zone. Failure to observe this may result in a drafting penalty.

d.            At every instant during the overlapping of draft zones, the rear competitor must be seen to be gaining on the forward competitor or motorcycle or vehicle. Failure to observe this may result in a drafting penalty.

e.            Once passed, a competitor must immediately commence to drop back out of the draft zone of the forward competitor before attempting to re-pass. A competitor is deemed to have been passed once the leading edge of the front wheel of the passing bicycle has moved in front of the leading edge of the front wheel of the competitor’s bicycle. Failure to observe this may result in a drafting penalty

A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR AN OCEAN SWIM
Watching us all from his vantage point on the Jetty, Andrew Rowlings has provided the following list of general observations.

But before we get into them, we would like to extend our thanks and congratulations to the team at Village Sports, the volunteers & sponsors who all made the Coffs Ocean Swims on the weekend such a great success. Over 300 people participated in the main event, and many more in the junior events and 600m swim.

Mick & Sinclair must have the ear of the weather gods who provided us with perfect conditions for the morning. Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club was very well represented, both in general participation and also on the podium.

And one of our club members also deserves a special mention for the following random act of kindness. This was sent to us via the website:

“Hi
Just wanted to pass on a thank you to the club member who lent me a pair of swimmers so I could do the Coffs ocean swim. I arrived from Ballina to find I had left my swimmers at home, I mentioned this to one of the guys who was helping to set up and he went home and grabbed some swimmers for me to use. It was much appreciated! Best of luck to all in your club.
Regards
Scott Callaghan”

Whoever the kind donor of swimwear may be, I think we all agree you have are a truly generous soul and thanks for helping out this random stranger. You have done us all proud.

Congratulations to everyone who participated. And thanks again to Village Sports for providing us with such a fantastic local event.

Some Independent Observations
By Andrew Rowlings
A few things stood out in Sunday’s swim events, with our independent observer stationed on the jetty noticing the following:
  • Skill level difference between the pool specialists and the open water swimmers, with the positioning around cans of the clubbies a pleasure to watch
  • Physical side of gaining the best position in the water, with the bigger guys using their weight to advantage with no lack of body contact
  • Start line positioning according to confidence level, with those exuding self-belief forcing themselves into pole position
  • Amount of competitors suffering from leg cramps when exiting the water, transferring blood from upper body to lower limbs and going down in a heap
  • Some competitors swimming additional metres through lack of navigation, lifting the head every 150 metres and then adjusting their line... left, right, left, right: adding a lot of metres to the 2000m race distance
  • Sue Tempone doing her Sally Pearson impersonation when she hit the sand and saw husband Cec not far away. Sue hurdled waves, people and anything else in her way to ensure she beat Cec to the line.
  • Those looks of achievement as athletes crossed the finish line, from those same faces that showed nervous trepidation not long beforehand.
  • Huge range of ages displaying that chronological age is no limiter if the mind is willing.

FRONTIER PROJECTS FUNDRAISER
Lyndal Green will be doing Ironman Cairns on 8th June this year and has decided to do it as a fundraiser for a special charity – Frontier Projects.

100% of all donations to Frontier Projects go directly to the charity. They are involved in a couple of projects but the one Lyndal is interested in is in Haiti. After the catastrophic earthquake in 2010 hundreds of schools were wrecked. About 1 year ago in the mountains of Haiti a small school was rebuilt by Frontiers volunteers. Until that time the kids had to go down the mountain to school and, sadly, some never returned.

Lyndal is trying to raise $750 which pays for one teacher for a year. Lyndal is asking you to help these kids realise their dreams - just like millions of other kids in other countries.

After the Club Championships this weekend, Lyndal will be having a $2. She is asking if everyone could throw in a gold coin.

You can also sponsor her via the Frontiers Project web page at http://www.frontierprojects.org/lyndal-green-triathlon-fundraiser.html.

Lyndal would like to thank you all in advance for helping the kids of Bouvier School in Haiti. Good luck in Cairns Lyndal and we looking forward to hearing all about the race and the school.

SAFARI
By Andrew Rowlings
Coffs Triathlon Club has two members heading to Ironman South Africa next week, breaking new ground as the first locals to head to the Port Elizabeth event.

Both Joe Kane and Andrew Pitzen have one previous IM under their belt, with impressive results at New Zealand in 2013.

There is little doubt they are better prepared for this event, with higher expectations and even loftier target times.

They topped off their training on Saturday with an 80km time trial on the bike, followed with x 2km run repeats at race tempo.

The event will begin at 4pm our time next Sunday, April 6 as competitors head into Nelson Mandella Bay for their 3.8km swim. You can follow their progress on www.ironmanlive.com.
