THIRD RACE OF THE SEASON From the President Hi Everyone Many will have noticed the increased traffic around the jetty area and we’re only two races into our calendar. As summer approaches we can only expect this to increase which is the primary reason we are starting our races as close to 6:30 am as possible. For this to work it is imperative that those on duty turn up at 5:45 am. The club hosts 13 races over the season and I don’t believe it’s unreasonable to do duty for just one. When you are rostered on, as well as your allocated area of responsibility you should be there for bringing gear out of the storage are and taking it back after the race. Also to state the obvious, you cannot compete in a race when you are rostered on duty. We have had a few enquiries regarding junior members competing in club races. Attached to this newsletter you will find a TRI NSW participation policy regarding distances for juniors competing in triathlons. The distances for our enticer or short course race is 350/10/2.5 and long course 750/20/5. September has been a busy month with two club races, the Coffs Harbour Running Festival and the Woopi Tri Festival. Interesting to note that the organisers of the events Mick Maley, Sinclair Black, Leeann Lloyd their families and band of assistants are all Coffs Tri Club members. Funds raised from these events go directly back into the community via charities, schools, volunteer and sporting clubs. We should be thankful for not only the chance to compete but that members of our club are out there doing their bit for the Coffs Coast community.
See you out there Michael (Mick) Dougherty SWIM COURSE TO REMAIN THE SAME In a previous newsletter it was mentioned that a change to the swim course had been proposed and would be trialled at the third race of the season. Please note that the swim course will remain the same for the rest of the season. With the feedback received and in consultation with the committee, there was no compelling reason to change. CLUB UNIFORMS Don’t forget that Michelle Clarke will be placing an order on 6th October. She has samples available to try on. Just give Michelle a call on 0412 091 449 or email [email protected] to arrange a time. WOOPI TRI CHTC was well represented at the Woopi Tri Festival, and on the podium, on the weekend. Daniel Stein was first overall in 1:24:57 and took another step forward as a professional triathlete. Full results are on the CHTC website at www.coffstri.com. Congratulations to all who participated. It was another fantastic day in near-perfect conditions. And a big thank you to the race organisers and volunteers who all made the day run so smoothly. ROLLING WORKSHOP Limited spaces are still available for the Foam Rolling Seminar this weekend. There is no doubt that a roller aids in recovery, if used correctly. Many people use a roller but only a few have any idea how to get the most benefit. The Seminar will be held at Coffs Harbour Olympic Pool on Saturday 5th October in 2 sessions – Session 1 at 7:30am and Session 2 at 8:30am. The cost is $50, which includes the 1 hour seminar plus a JF roller to take home. If you don’t require a roller, the cost is $30. It will be presented by Exercise Physiologist Jono Freeman, from the Gold Coast and formerly from Macksville. Among other things, Jono currently consults to high performance sporting organisations and various corporate businesses, designing health programs and workplace injury prevention through movement assessment and exercise prescription. Limited spaces are available and bookings are essential. IRONMAN LAKE TAHOE While we enjoy almost perfect conditions for our racing, spare a thought for the participants in the inaugural Ironman Lake Tahoe. The race was even tougher than athletes were expecting, with brutal weather conditions adding to the challenge of an already-tough course. The day before the race featured windy and freezing conditions, with snow falling at the end of the day. While it didn’t snow on race day, it was especially chilly with temperatures hovering around 0oC when athletes jumped into the water. Ironman Lake Tahoe saw a 20% DNF rate with an average finishing time of just over 14 hours. By comparison, the average DNF rate is around 10% and the average finishing time is about 12.5 hours. Ironman Lake Tahoe 2013 now holds the honour of second most DNFs in Ironman events. The record is 29% at Ironman St George 2012 where powerful winds turned the swim course into a washing machine and made many wish they had reconsidered their deep rim wheel choices for the ride. RECORD BREAKER Kenyan Wilson Kipsang broke the world record at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday morning. He took 15 seconds off the previous record, crossing the line in 2:03:23. For the non-mathematically inclined, that’s an average of around 2min 55s per kilometre! Try doing that for one kilometre, let alone 42 of them! You can read more about this amazing achievement on the following link http://www.bmw-berlin-marathon.com/en/news-and-media/news/2013/09/29/wilson-kipsang-shatters-marathon-world-record-in-berlin.html.
