Weekly Newsletter 30 June 2014

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
Membership for season 2014/15 is now open at www.trinsw.org.au.  It is time to commit to another season of racing, and look forward to those potential PB’s on the club course.

As was the case last season you will join both CHTC and TRINSW at the same time. Also you will need to select a duty and a duty date before completing the process.

Please note that during the upcoming season there will be NO REGISTRATIONS ON THE DAY OF A CLUB RACE. ALL REGISTRATIONS, WHETHER THEY BE FOR CLUB MEMBERSHIP OR ONE DAY MEMBERSHIP, MUST BE DONE ONLINE 24 HOURS BEFORE A RACE.

This process will streamline our race days, as with increasing numbers of participants it is imperative we get underway on time each event.
NEW SPONSORS WELCOMED
The committee of the Coffs Harbour Triathlon is very pleased to announce that Village Sports will be our Platinum Sponsor for the upcoming season. As you are aware Village Sports promote and run three major sporting events, the Coffs Coast Running Festival, the Coffs Ocean Swims and the BCU Triathlon. Mick and Wendy Maley and Sinclair and Hadley Black are the driving force behind Village Sports and have been supporters of our club for many years. We very much look forward to working and promoting their events during the upcoming season.

On the subject of sponsorship we are also happy to announce two new sponsors for the upcoming season, Michelle Clark – Hair at the Promenade and Ed Brazier - Cafe Splash Toormina Gardens Shopping World have joined as Silver Sponsors of our club. Ed has also advised that any members wishing to sample his delicious offerings receive a 10% discount on presentation of their TRINSW card.

PLANNING
Following on from last week, where it was suggested that now is the time to set the foundations in place for next season, members are encouraged to contact our two local qualified coaches if they need advice on which races to focus on, or how to structure their training.

Phil Benoit and Andrew Rowlings are both available for all members and are only a phone call or email away.

If you have any queries get in touch with either, or both, and let them provide you with their thoughts on your race and training schedule.

A chat will cost you nothing but your time, and may help in weighing up your options early enough to formulate a backup plan for season 2014-2015.

MOUNTAIN RUN
Camden Haven Surf Life Saving Club has contacted our Tri Club inviting members to participate in their King of the Mountain Run, to be held at North Brother Mountain in Laurieton on Sunday, August 17.

It will cost you $20 per adult or $10 per child, with a family option of $40 for two adults and two children available.

There will be prizes of King, Queen, Prince (U16) and Princess (U16) categories as well as Biggest Team and Best Dressed.

Entry forms are available online at www.chslsc.com.au

This is a challenging, yet scenic course, and could suit those stronger runners in the club.

RUNNING
Well done to all those club members who raced at Corindi on Sunday, taking part in one of the distance options that comprise the North Coast Road Running Championships.

Was a great opportunity for many to have a final race pace hitout prior to the Gold Coast Marathon this coming weekend, where Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club will be represented over every distance.

For those unaware, the mens record for the Gold Coast Marathon is shared by two athletes.

Yuki Kawauchi from Japan and Nicholas Manza from Kenya have stopped the clock in identical times in different years, with 2:10:01 being the mark set by each of them.

Both are running this weekend, setting up a potentially great encounter as they aim to lower the current mark when they meet on this course for the first time.

Although perhaps a little off record pace, look for those Coffs Tri members competing to be working just as hard as the frontrunners.

Good luck to all.

SLICK TIMES
Ironman Austria was one of many international events conducted over the weekend, with former Olympic Distance World Champion Ivan Rana stopping the clock in the third fastest time ever over the IM distance.

His 7hr48min included a 2hr43min run that finished with a celebratory walk all the way down the finish chute.

The women’s race record was lowered by Lindsey Corbin at the same event with her 8hr42min giving her a comfortable margin over the runner-up.

This is a fast course, but as always with slick times, there is speculation that the run may be 1km short and that the bike may also give 3-4km benefit to the athletes.

Ironman Couer d’Alene was taken out by Andy Potts and Heather Wurtele.

Bart Aernouts and Tina Deckers made it a Belgium double when they triumphed in Ironman France on a tough Nice course.

Aussie Tim Reed notched a victory at Buffalo Springs 70.3, with Angela Naeth taking the womens race. This was an interesting event with the ladies top three being a closer result than the males.

This seems to be a developing trend internationally with the female depth in the bigger events showing a lot more quality. Gone are the days when the majority of races had the men only several minutes apart, but the ladies with 5-10min gaps between place-getters.

The fairer sex are now providing close head-to-head battles that we usually only witnessed from the male field.

SLICKER TIME
The Australian 1000m run record was broken over the weekend when Victoria’s Jeff Riseley clocked a 2:16:09 to take almost half a second off the mark set by Grant Cremer 14 years previously.

Risely was competing in Europe, getting ready for the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games and looks to be in career best shape.

USA AGE GROUP RANKINGS
Arriving in the mail this week was the USA Triathlon governing body regular magazine, which has age group rankings listed.

Interesting to note that courtesy of the Team Coffs Cardiology tour there last year, there are two Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club members still in the rankings.

Reece Edwards holds a place in the top 10 of the 20-24 division, while Andrew Rowlings sneaks into the top 100 of the “older guys”.

GEAR
Currently there are a couple of bikes for sale that may interest new members, or those considering upgrading equipment.

Kath Porter is selling a very nice 2008 BMC Time Machine (see pic attached), size S/M. This was considered their top aluminium model and has lots of life left in it. Asking $750 without wheels.

Only 12 months old and not done much work is a Felt F95 (see pic attached) which would suit a female or junior athlete. The bike is running Shimano Sora gear and is priced at $400. Tamzin Pike is the lady to see if you are keen.

Also on the market is a Giro time trial helmet for $125, plus an aluminium Teschner  Aero TT bike that would suit someone around 180cm and is available for $550.

If you would like further information or contact details for any of the above please email [email protected]
