11/6/2014 0 Comments Weekly Newsletter 3 June 2014ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING This is the last reminder that the club’s Annual General Meeting is on tomorrow night (that is, if you’re reading this on Tuesday. If you’re reading this on Wednesday then it’s on TONIGHT!!! Yes, the 4th June). The meeting will be held in the downstairs room at the Yacht Club at 7pm. If you want to know what it’s all about, the Agenda for the evening is attached. This is your opportunity to get involved in the Club and have your say, so please make the effort to attend. Any queries about what you can do to help out can be directed to the current President Michael Dougherty at mdoc@citycentre.com.au. If anyone is interested in taking up a position or nominating another club member for a position, please email Margaret Gill (Secretary) prior to 4th June. Send your nominations to margie_is_@hotmail.com.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt and warm thank you to all the outgoing Committee members who have worked so hard to make 2013/14 such a success. In particular, thanks to Club President Michael Dougherty who has done an exemplary job and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to take Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club to the next level. It has been both a pleasure and a privilege to work with you. Thanks Mick. TRIATHLON OFFICIAL COURSE Allan Harrison will be conducting a Level One TO course in on Friday 13th June from 5.30pm at the Quality Inn City Centre, 22 Elizabeth St, Coffs Habour. There are still a few places available. However you will need to contact Allan by this Thursday 5th June if you wish to participate. You can contact Allan on 0412 021 665. There is no cost involved and our Club would greatly appreciate having more accredited Technical Officials. As a point of interest accredited TOs receive 10 points at the Club Champs and we only had one TO at Forster in April. Just saying. RULE OF THE WEEK – a digression The disqualification of Craig Alexander at Ironman 70.3 Hawai’i on the weekend highlights that no-one is exempt from the rules and emphasises the need for each and every athlete to be responsible for knowing, and understanding, the rules that apply to the race in which they are competing. Crowie was disqualified under USA Triathlon (USAT) rules for completing the swim leg wearing a sleeved racing suit during a non-wetsuit swim race. This is not allowed according to the USAT rules. Ever the gentleman and good sportsman, Alexander took it in his stride and accepted his DQ fate. There were some calls on social media for the race officials to “take better care of their pros”. However, as Crowie himself said, he should have known the rules and took full responsibility. On his Facebook page, he stated “The irony is it wasn't great to swim in but unfortunately, I didn't have a sleeveless kit with me. As a pro athlete, I should know the rule”. While we would never condone any breach of the rules, Crowie should be applauded for his professionalism in accepting his DQ and acknowledging that pro athletes are the same as everyone else and are obliged to obey the rules. If you are have any doubts about the rules of triathlon in Australia, you can read the full rules at http://www.triathlon.org.au/Technical/Race_Competition_Rules.htm. It’s also a good reminder to check out the rules of Triathlon that apply in any foreign countries where you might be racing. SPEAKING OF FOREIGN RACING… We don’t usually publish race results, but a couple of recent overseas races deserve a mention. Firstly, members of Team RETRO travelled to Hawai’I for the Ironman 70.3 (Honu Half). While a full race report is being penned by one of the travelling athletes, we would like to extend our congratulations to Clint Rowlings, who not only came 2nd in his category, but definitively beat his father to the finish line by a little over 8 minutes. But as would be expected, Andrew also performed very well and finished 4th in his category which won him a spot at Kona but he declined. Leighton Rogan, Norman Howard, Bridget Diffey, Kim Fuller, Lynley Campton and Cath Harrison also competed and completed and performed incredibly well in what were the typical hot, blustery conditions of racing in Hawai’i. Ian Nash completed Ironman 70.3 in Japan, also in incredibly hot and difficult conditions. A crowded swim, hot winds and temperatures in the high 30s tested every athlete. Nashy came home in and admirable 7:10:56. Well done and congratulations on getting through a very tough race. BUT CLOSER TO HOME… Best of luck to all those travelling north for Ironman Cairns this Sunday. Looks like the weather gods could be smiling on you with temperatures for Sunday predicted to be in the low to mid 20s. You might have a bit of rain, and possibly some winds but it’s looking to be a lot cooler than previous years.
