SUNDAY RACE REPORT Just when you thought Lyndal Green couldn’t get any faster, she puts in the extraordinary race that saw her the fastest female at the Club race on Sunday. All Lyndal’s hard work training for the Sprint Championships is definitely paying off. And with the always-in-form Joe Kane away doing his thing at Hell of the West, Isiah Koopmans had the chance to enjoy being the fastest male. Isiah is quickly showing the promise that saw him awarded our Junior Scholarship. Lots of other members were in fine form on Sunday, no doubt helped along by yet another near perfect morning for racing. Vicki Tillott shaved several minutes off her time, Dallas Howard and Jo Ferguson both finished their first long course in very respectable times, and the Marsden family (Kate, Sarah & Matthew) continue to show the benefits of a new approach to their training. It was also good to see Sarvi Thompson back on the course. Some of us are still feeling a little sluggish with the extra weight & down time over Christmas, but no doubt times will continue to improve as the season progresses and people get closer to their key races. A big thanks to our sponsors and in particular to Ventoux Cycles for providing prizes for our random prize draw. Some lucky members are now the proud owners of vouchers and other goodies courtesy of Ventoux. Good to see Al Scotford out on the course too!
And if you are the owner of a pair of orange Newton runners and are not sure where they are right now, then you possibly left them behind after the race. Please contact Mick Dougherty at [email protected] or another committee member to arrange to retrieve them. Unfortunately it also needs to be mentioned that some members are not abiding by the Club’s rules to pay courtesy to the non-racing public sharing our roads and paths. One member of the public was walking along the path along the jetty and pushing a stroller and was forced off the path a few times by members not giving way. Please remember that we are allowed to use our fantastic course by the good grace of the Council and the public, so please respect other users of the paths by moving around them rather than forcing them off the path. Also noted was several packs of riders drafting on the bike course. We have mentioned several times that this is against the rules of triathlon and can result in a penalty for those committing the offence. Please remember our Race Competition Rules at all times, and keep 7m away from the person in front of you. The technicalities of this rule will be described further in next week’s newsletter. Please also remember that on the bike course we are required to obey the road rules, just like the vehicles with which we share the road. It was noted that several people did not stop to give way to traffic already on the roundabouts. If you are unfamiliar with the rules of using a roundabout, please use go to http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/roundabouts.html for a full description of all NSW road rules relating to the use of roundabouts. But in a nutshell, you must give way to traffic already on the roundabout and this includes coming to a complete stop to let the vehicle pass. It is vital that we maintain favourable public opinion so that we can continue to use public roads and paths for our regular races. Please bear this in mind when racing and training. HELL OF THE WEST RACE REPORT By Clint Rowlings Too often when floating on the start line I seem to ask myself the question "what the hell am I doing here?" This question is never stronger than when I am floating in muddy, hot water in the dark at Goondiwindi each year. This question, however, seems to be getting easier and easier to answer as each year we convince more and more people to make the journey out west one month after Christmas to see where their fitness is at as the season is kicking off. This year 16 thrill seekers headed out to see what pain they could inflict on themselves. Due to recent rain in the Goondiwindi Shire the river was flowing. This made all the farmers smile however it does create headaches for the race organisers who were forced to change the swim location to the dam in the Botanic gardens. Three lovely loops of the dam and competitors have a 3.5km run to town where they mount their speed machines and head 40km west, perform a U-turn and head straight back to town. The ride is flat, bumpy and exposed. Some of the highlights of the ride include being rag dolled across the road by passing road trains, seeing pig hunters’ utes loaded to the hilt after a productive night on the rifle and being stared at by local farmers from the side of the road who clearly cannot work out what the hell we are doing riding along in budgy smugglers! After 80km on the bike it’s back to town for 3 loops of the run. Each loop is 16.5km that runs along the levy bank of the fast flowing McIntyre River. This run course is awesome, as you can constantly hurl abuse at each other and enjoy the fact that you are not the only one suffering after the Christmas break. The trip is fast becoming the highlight of my racing year. Going out west with zero expectations is a great way to see where my fitness (or lack of) is at. The highlights for me this year were:
Anyone looking at photos/videos from this year thinking "man that looks fun" you are correct! Anyone looking at the same photos/videos thinking "man I would love to go out and do that race" whats stopping you? VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR bcu COFFS TRI Village Sports the platinum sponsor of our club and have contributed so much to help us make our club races run more smoothly. Having a race like the bcu Coffs TRI gives us the opportunity not only to race on home turf, but to also show off our beautiful playground to visiting triathletes. The bcu Coffs TRI on 7-8 March cannot run without the generous support of volunteers so if you can spare a few hours on Saturday or Sunday to assist with the smooth running of the event, please email Mick Maley at [email protected]. Volunteers are particularly needed for the Sunday events. So if you are not racing, then please contact Mick and offer to volunteer on the day. And even if you are racing on Sunday, Village Sports can always use hands before, and especially after the day’s events. Your help is very much appreciated by the team at Village Sports. CLUB UNIFORMS Due to the fall in the Australian dollar, the price of our club uniforms will be approximately $5 more than originally quoted. Our club uniform office, Michelle Clarke, received an email from the supplier last night informing of this unforeseeable price increase. Please note that the club passes on the uniforms at our cost price with no profit. But we do hope this does not inconvenience any members greatly.
