CHTC RACE CALENDAR & REGISTRATION
If you’re wanting to plan the season ahead, the CHTC 2014-2015 race calendar is now available on our website. Go to http://www.coffstri.com/events--results.html to see what’s in store for the season. Our first race is on 21 September. After all that Commonwealth Games exciting, I can’t wait to hit out on the course!

Membership for season 2014/15 is now open at www.trinsw.org.au.

As was the case last season you will join both CHTC and TRINSW at the same time. Also you will need to select a duty and a duty date before completing the process. The selection of your duty when joining CHTC is used as a guide only.  You will be notified via Duty Man as to which duty you have been allocated.
When you pay your Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club membership, this includes your social membership for the Coffs Harbour Yacht Club.

Please note that during the upcoming season there will be NO REGISTRATIONS ON THE DAY OF A CLUB RACE. ALL REGISTRATIONS, WHETHER THEY BE FOR CLUB MEMBERSHIP OR ONE DAY MEMBERSHIP, MUST BE DONE ONLINE 24 HOURS BEFORE A RACE. This process will streamline our race days, as with increasing numbers of participants it is imperative we get underway on time each event.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES
It has been an action-packed 5 days at the Commonwealth Games. Having the triathlon as one of the first events was fantastic, as the races were broadcast almost in their entirety. Watching draft-legal triathlon is always interesting to see the tactics used on the bike leg and the way it works in the pack. It’s not something many of us experience as club triathletes.

The Australian triathlon team put in a brilliant effort but just could not match the raw talent, power & skill of the English athletes. Emma Jackson came in 5th in the women’s race, after sticking with the lead pack on the bike. But she just couldn’t hold on to the race leaders on the run. But it was edge-of-your-seat viewing as she held on and gave it her all to finish in 1:59:34.  Emma Moffatt was not far behind in 7th place at 2:01:31. Jodie Stimpson from England won a well-deserved gold medal with her strong run finish to drop Canada’s Kirsten Sweetland in the last kilometre and finish in 1:58:56. It was awesome to watch.

As for the men, well you just can’t fault the Brownlee brothers. They are in a class of their own and have without argument raised the bar for draft-legal Olympic distance triathlon. They formed their own front pack on the bike (with Austin from Scotland valiantly trying to keep up with them until the 3rd lap). Alistair then put in his characteristic strong run, which is always a pleasure to watch. He left Johnathan behind after about 5km only to walk the last few metres and savour the moment and still take the win with 11s to spare. He won in 1:48:50.

Our Australian men showed they are going to be a force of their own in the years to come, with Ryan Bailie taking 5th place in 1:50:44, Aaron Royle in 8th place at 1:51:03 and Dan Wilson not far behind in 9th position at 1:51:36. It will be good to see these men progress and develop their talent in time for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Then, as if we hadn’t seen enough brilliance, the English dream team of the Brownlees, Stimpson & bronze medallist Vicky Holland dominated the relay and took out first place. The Australian team of Moffatt, Royle, Jackson & Bailie held their own and came in with a bronze medal. Congratulations to all our Australian competitors. It was fantastic to see you all in action.

Here are some of my favourite moments over the past few days:
  • Watching the three triathlon races in two days…naturally…was buzzing for days!
  • Alistair & Johnny Brownlee dominating the men’s race. Always mesmerising.
  • The new “Eric the Eel” making his debut triathlon in the men’s race. I repeat, debut triathlon, Kenya’s Vincent Ochieng Onyango had never completed a full triathlon before and only learnt to swim in his 20s (he’s now 28). He chose to breaststroke around the swim course, as his breaststroke is stronger than his freestyle. Unfortunately he was plucked from the water and given a DNF before he had a chance to show us his 30min 10km run and 1:05 40km bike. It would have been sensational to see him finish. But how inspiring to see him get out there and give it a go.
  • Michael Shelley following his own race plan and putting in an incredible win in the marathon. Watching him diligently having his gels and not being led by the surges of the Kenyans saw him finish incredibly strongly and set a new PB of 2:11:15.
  • Jess Trengove also following her own race plan and picking off the very strong Kenyan and Namibian runners to bring home the bronze in 2:30:12. She looked strong, relaxed yet determined the whole way.
  • How about Scotland’s Derek Hawkins coming in at 9th place in the men’s marathon, “spewing my guts up” (as he so delicately put it) all the way down the finish chute. But not missing a beat and still finishing in 2:14:49.
  • Anna Meares, Stephanie Morton, Matthew Glaetzer and Kieren Modra on the cycling track. 66km/hr???? My quads were screaming just looking at those times.
  • The swimming. All of it.

RULE OF THE WEEK
Just in case you think drafting is permissible in our brand of triathlon, here’s just a quick reminder of where we stand.

Rule 3.9 - Bicycle or Motorcycle Draft Zone
a.            For all events with a cycling distance up to and including 40 kilometres, the bicycle draft zone is a rectangle 7 metres long and 3 metres wide that surrounds every bicycle competitor and every motorcycle on the bicycle course. The front edge of the front bicycle and motorcycle wheel defines the centre of the leading 3 metres edge of the rectangle. Competitors have 15 seconds to pass through this zone.
b.            For all events with a cycling distance greater than 40 kilometres, the bicycle draft zone is a rectangle 12 metres long and 3 metres wide that surrounds every bicycle competitor and every motorcycle on the bicycle course. The front edge of the front bicycle and motorcycle wheel defines the centre of the leading 3 metres edge of the rectangle. Competitors have 25 seconds to pass through this zone.

LE TOUR
It’s over for another year. Now we can get sleep! (Umm…maybe when the Commonwealth Games are over).

Vincenzo Nibali of Italy took out the race in the driving rain on the backside-busting cobblestones of Paris. He said his mountain bike experience helped him to stay in control when others were sliding & crashing all around him.

It was a more gruelling race than previous years, with an additional leg in the beginning set in the fells of Yorkshire. Ouch.

And just to prove what cycling 3663.5km can do, check out the legs of Polish cyclist Bartosz Huzarski after 18th stage. He said “Of course I will not have legs like Victoria’s Secret models, or Mary from the nearby vegetable shop, or anyone working in an office who does a 10km bike ride or an hour run three times a week”. Understatement. And a pretty good knicks tan too!
