22/4/2015 0 Comments weekly newsletter 28 April 2015AWESOME AUTUMN You know winter is fast approaching when the cool westerly winds arrive and the sun sits so low in the sky you can’t see the final swim buoy for the glare. The ride leg was also a challenge with the glare from the sun keeping everyone squinting, particularly those senior members already struggling with their eyesight. However, cool conditions also means no overheating and there were some slick run splits as a result. Fastest male was again Richard Pearson with 58 minutes flat, rather slow for his standards and an indication of a long season. Leighton Rogan is in top form ahead of Port Macquarie Ironman and finished with a season best and Sam Bourke was third. Two other Ironman competitors Chrissie Lefeaux and Jen Hoyle topped off their training taking 1st and 2nd respectively among the women and run specialist Jess Dougherty continues to improve in her rookie season coming in third. Well done to junior member Jake Golding with a PB and was proudly watched by his father Sean, no doubt having thoughts of days gone by. Other noteworthy performances were Paul Dance, Peter Birch, Mel McCosker, Kerry Cameron and the colourfully dressed Charles Barnes. There was some great racing in the short course with Ky Sullivan and Rhianna Birch finishing first in the men’s and women’s divisions. Our next and final club race for the season will be this Sunday. It’s a long course event consisting of 1/30/7.5 to tune everyone up for the Club Champs. There will be two waves with the women going off go and men following 10 minutes later. The course will consist of two swim laps, three bike laps and three run laps, if you have intentions of doing less please let the handicapper know prior. The enticer will start two minutes after the men head off. As the event will take longer to complete racing will start at 6.30 am sharp so arrive early.
In conjunction with the long course event, the club will also be running our annual sponsors team race. Any club sponsor wishing to enter a team, you will need one swimmer one biker and one runner. Please email our handicapper at [email protected] with your team members’ names and a timing chip will be available for collection on the morning. If your team member is not a member of the club or TRINSW you will need to complete the one day licence and registration via the club website. A BBQ will be held afterwards with food supplied by Tim Jacobs at the Chicken Butchery so please hang around if you can. CLUB CHAMPS 2015 Entries are still open for Club Champs on 16th May. We need as many volunteers, supporters and competitors coming down for this year’s Club Champs in Forster as possible. HANDICAPPER 2015/2016 SEASON The club is looking for someone who is willing to be trained as our Handicapper for next season. Over many years Martin Rose had admirably done the job with assistance from Dave Leckenby. Both are willing to help and fill in when required but it is very important someone is also trained. See below for further information: • The role does not mean you can't race! Once the pre-race timer has started the system does not require any further interaction until the race is finished. • Although you need to be a competent computer user (Windows), you do not require any specific technical skills - there are procedures on how to operate the software. • David Leckenby will do the initial preparation of the system at the start of season as well as provide technical support if/when required. If you are interested please contact [email protected]. IRONMAN PORT MACQUARIE Good luck and best wishes to those competing at Ironman Australia on the weekend. We will be thinking of Leighton Rogan, Mark Garner, Lee Varney, Jen Hoyle, Jon Waites, Christine Lefeaux, Jon Murray, Anne Grundy, Peter Wood, Chris Limbert, Jason Limbert, Keaton Ingram and John Pearce who will all be lining this Sunday. This is the 30th anniversary of IM Australia, so the atmosphere will be buzzing. If you able head down to Port after the club race and cheer them on, it’s a multi lap event so I’m sure they would appreciate some support from familiar faces. ULTRAMAN Anyone who is looking for a step up from Ironman will be interested that a new distance event is being added to the Triathlon scene called Ultraman. Our club Technical Official Allan Harrison will be on duty at the first “test” event in Noosa in the coming weeks. The event consists of:
Times are accumulated over 3 days plus penalties
Entry is by invitation only with a maximum of 50 competitors. This is first time it has been staged outside USA/Hawaii. There will be a very select international field of men and women, with a support crew for each competitor. There are no aid stations and each competitor is self-sufficient throughout with the aid of support teams for medical, food, mechanical, hydration, the lot. Alan will be the only TO, since it is essentially a test race for both race organisers and TA. Rules are a little different from the TA RCR (eg drafting in the swim is illegal and each swimmer must have 2 paddled support craft - one supplied by the Race Director, the other from the support crew. Drafting in the bike leg is different in that the draft zone is 12 metres behind AND in front with 20 seconds to make the pass AND put the 12 metre gap on the overtaken rider). Any takers for the future? ADVENTURETHON COFFS HARBOUR LOCAL EVENT ASSISTANT NEEDED A local event assistant is needed in the Coffs Harbour region ahead of the Adventurethon Coffs Harbour on 10th and 11th October 2015. The event consists of paddling, mountain biking and running on the Coffs Coast and shows off some really scenic areas, challenges participants and is a heap of fun. There are also various distances and difficulties with a harder day on the Saturday 10th October, followed by a beginner friendly and junior day on the Sunday 11th October. The Adventurethon organisers typically run a lot of the prep work from their QLD office however some tasks will be better serviced locally. Tasks that they will need for the Coffs Harbour event assistant to undertake will include but are not limited to:
The right person does not have to be super fit but needs to love the idea of what Adventurethon are doing and have an interest in one of the sports (paddle, bike or run). The right person needs to have integrity and honesty and be comfortable talking to people as they will become the local face when current Adventurethon staff are not there. Most of the tasks are pre and post-event so if the right person also wants to race at the event that can also be arranged (But they don’t have to!) The tasks can be done in flexible hours and as long as the job gets done they are happy to be flexible with other arrangements. There will be a set amount of money available for this position on a project basis with potential for growth for the right person in future years (information available on request). If you know the right person to be involved in Adventurethon Coffs Harbour please get them to email a brief letter of interest and follow it up with a phone call to Joel Savage on the below contact details. Regards Joel & Tamara Savage Adventurethon PH: 0447 496 489 Email: [email protected]
