WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 23RD SEPTEMBER

FIRST RACE REPORT
We had the best of the day for first race of the season, which saw 69 members tackle the long course and 17 on the short course. While it might have been the same course as usual, the conditions tested us on every leg.

The water was warmer than anticipated, but slightly rough on the entry and exit. High tide made it a longer swim than usual. On the bike leg, speeds were either hindered or helped by the wind, depending on the direction you were travelling! The mild weather made the temperature for the run pleasant, with the headwind coming back down the Jetty the only hindrance.

Richard Pearson once again showed his dominance on the course, coming in 10 minutes before the next contender. Despite declaring that he was hurting badly, Simon Burgess was second over the line with an in-form Joe Kane in third. Also good to see Sam Burke stepping up to the long course and coming in fourth and in a very respectable 1:11:33. Expect to see this time come down as the season progresses.
Lyndal Green was the first female over the line, showing that she has recovered well from her recent Ironman hitout. Jennifer Hoyle & Sarah Brazenor were neck and neck with only 6 seconds between them.

So many members are looking in good form and are ready to go for a great season ahead. Keep an eye out for Brianna Rooney, Reuben van Wyngaardt and Kate Marsden as they each get stronger and faster. Good to see many first timers on the course. Welcome to all our new members!

Also good to see so many familiar faces back for yet another season, which is looking to be our best so far.

Our next race is on 5th October, which is also the long weekend and also the first day of daylight saving!

CLARIFICATION
There seemed to be some confusion regarding registration.

If you have joined online as a full club member you do not need to register for each race, simply turn up with your timing chip and race belt and walk across the mat for the short or long course as in previous years.

If you have joined CHTC as a new member and don’t have a timing chip and race belt, our handicapper Martin Rose will have one for you on the day. You then you strap the chip on your ankle and walk across the mat for short or long course.

If you are just testing the waters and want to do a club tri, you can register online (www.coffstri.com) for a one day licence prior to 12pm on the Saturday. A timing chip and race belt will be available from our handicapper Martin Rose on the morning of the race. You can only do this twice before joining the club as a full member.

Remember race starts at 6.30am sharp.

BOUNCING FAMILY FUN DAY
All members of CHTC have been invited to come along to the Family Fun Day at Springloaded Trampoline Park on 12th October at 4 - 6pm.

This will be an opportunity to meet others and introduce your family to the Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club family.

For the generous rate of $10 per bouncer, you get 2 hours of exclusive bouncing fun for the entire family. The club is also providing a sausage sizzle.  Drinks can be purchased at the venue, but bring plenty of water.  You will need it!

Bookings are essential.  Please text Kristy 0418 425 577 if you can come.

Please see the attached Flyer for more details.

SEEKING SWIM COMPANIONS
Keen to practice your Ocean Swim skills?  Judy Chesney is looking for kindred spirits to join her for a Jetty Swim at 7:00 am every Saturday for an hour or so. If you are really keen, you still have time to back it up with Richard's running group at 8am.

Meet in the Yacht Club car park at 7:00am. Rain, hail or shine. Only cancelled if the sea is too rough.

BLUEBERRY HILL DUATHLON RACE REPORT
By Steel Beveridge
Richard Pearson was a man on a mission in this year’s Blueberry Hill Duathlon . Not only did he want to be first to complete the 7.2kms run, 37 kms cycle, 7.2kms run course he wanted to break the course record set by Reece Edwards in 2012. With team runner Jordan Gusman setting a blistering pace for the first run leg Pearson had the ‘rabbit’ he needed to set the tone for the rest of the event.

The Woolgoolga professional triathlete took charge completely in the bike leg completing the five laps of the Range Road loop in under one hour leaving him over seven minutes clear of his nearest pursuer, Marcus O’Brien, who was experiencing the event for the first time. Finishing with a 27.21 run to hold off a hard-charging Gusman doing his second run Pearson sliced over five minutes from the course record.

Gusman’s two super-quick run legs of 24.50 and 25.24 ensured that he and cyclist , Greg Sullivan would become only the second team to go under two hours.

Marcus O’Brien was a clear runner-up finishing almost 16 minutes ahead of another event first-timer, Paul Herring, whose bike ride proved the difference between himself and his pursuers.

Another event debutant, Kate Marsden, was the leading lady, also proving too strong on the bike for runner-up, Jess Dougherty, who nevertheless posted the fast two run splits for the women. Third went to former winner and perennial place-getter , Lyn Fulton.

RESULTS (MALE) – Richard Pearson 1.52.00 (record) (26.42, 57.57, 27.21), 1; Marcus O’Brien 2.05.52 (29.49, 62.18, 33.45) 2; Paul Herring 2.21.39 (33.34, 72.04, 36.01), 3; Ed Brazier 2.24.00(31.28, 78.02, 34.30), 4; Phil Benoit 2.26.46 (35.56, 76.03, 34.47), 5; Mark Griffiths 2.26.54 (35.01, 72.34, 39.19), 6; Reuben Van Wyngaarnt  2.32.35 (37.48, 72.52, 41.55), 7; Ian Swanborough 2.33.13 (36.03, 73.27,43.43), 8; Peter Giddins 3.00.41 (44.33, 85.02, 51.06), 9; Steel Beveridge 4.09.28, 10.

CHTC CLASSIFIEDS
  • Kylie Pepper has a time trial bike for sale. If you are looking to upgrade to a time trial bike, this is a great first TT bike. It's 4 years old but has only done three half Ironmans and has been regularly serviced so there is plenty left in this bike. It has a small frame and a SMP saddle especially for women. It has been set up in aggressive time trial position for triathlons however can easily accommodate a more classic road position. There are a couple of scratches to the frame which are cosmetic only otherwise it’s a really fast, stuff and power driven TT bike. She’s asking for $1500 to pick up in Bellingen. You can contact Kylie on 0404 055 008 or email Kyliepepper@hotmail.com. Here is a link to all the specs http://www.azzurribikes.com/#!chrono-elite-tt/ceaw & also see the attached picture.

  • Matt Dagger is selling his old roadbike as he has just bought a new. It is a 2012 Trek 1.2 (aluminium with carbon forks) 58cm and is two seasons old. It was purchased as an entry level triathlon bike. It has Shimano Sora Shifters (9 speed) and front derailleur, and Shimano Tiagra rear derailleur, with Shimano 105 clip in pedals. Matt is looking for $600 ono. It would be a good bike for someone new to the sport not wanting to spend a fortune on their first bike. Matt’s phone number is 0418623795 if anyone is interested.

  • Michelle Clarke is looking for a bike just for her wind trainer. She is after someing up to about $200. If you have something suitable that you’re looking to sell, please contact Michelle by email at shellclarke88@gmail.com.
