2014-15 SUCCESS STARTS NOW
Most club members have had a break from triathlon over the past 4-6 weeks, and the majority will be beginning to get itchy feet and start looking through the race calendar for next season.

This is the ideal time to prepare your racing schedule, and put in place a training plan that will see you get the most from yourself when competition resumes.

It doesn’t matter whether you plan to stick with club events with the occasional away race, or target an overseas destination event; the time for forward planning is now.

For those looking to race away from home, target those locations that suit you; if you are strong on the inclines look for a hilly course; if you excel in the ocean, search for testing open water swim starts; if you hate the cold look for a warmer climate.

It is possible to adapt your body to suit a specific course, but far easier to select an event that is already ideal for your current strengths.

A great example of a race suiting  the athlete is the recent Ironman Cairns, where male winner Cameron Brown felt “at home” in the cold and wet conditions. Although entering hoping for a warm and humid day in order to get physically prepared for hotter races later in the season, the unusually cooler day suited him perfectly, having won at Ironman New Zealand in more temperate conditions on more than 10 occasions.
Initially, select your priority events, there may be one or two races that you are particularly focussed on and want to do well at. These should be your A races, with everything structured around them.

You may also want to include some secondary targets, or B races where you will still be at peak fitness, but perhaps use these as trial runs for the days that really matter.

Next are your other events, those that you will train through, and use as stepping stones toward the major season goals.

Remember that it is difficult to maintain peak speed and fitness over an extended period, so the need to get the timing right for those priority events means some of the lower-key racing may need to be sacrificed to achieve the desired end result.

Whatever your season holds, start to put the pieces together now.

Although the club race calendar is still to be finalised, the first event will be conducted in September as will Woopi Tri, Blueberry Hills Duathlon and Yamba Tri Festival... be ready!

SPORTS OVERLOAD
It seems that we are currently in a phase of almost having too much sport going on around the world.

International triathlon and running events are constants, then throw in World Cup Soccer, State of Origin League, Wimbledon beginning this week, Tour de France only a fortnight away.

Throw in the Commonwealth Games to commence on July 23, which will feature Emma Moffatt in the triathlon.

Those who like to watch all forms of athletic activity are enjoying one spectacle after another, but as stated above, don’t forget to include some “doing” as well as the supporting.

LIGHT-HEARTED
Unless you are a fan of the England World Cup Soccer team, you may find the below amusing.

Printed in the Sydney Morning Herald prior to the competition commencing was a snippet along the lines of...

“The English team have taken time from their pre-match training routine to visit an orphanages in one of the poorer regions of Rio de Janiero. “It was heart-wrenching to see the looks of hopelessness on their poor little faces,” said 6-year-old Juan.

RUNNING
This coming Sunday will see the 2014 version of the North Coast Road Running Championships conducted from Corindi.

The feature is the 15km event out to Red Rock and return, which will commence at 8am.

Contact Steel Beveridge for full details.

This is a traditional leadup race for those contesting the Gold Coast Marathon, which will be conducted the following weekend.

Good luck to all club members competing both at Corindi and at the Gold Coast.

GEAR
Anyone who has updated their equipment since last season, in particular their bike, please let Andrew Rowlings know if you have something to sell.

The queries and requests have already commenced, with newcomers searching for bikes, helmets, cycle shoes and indoor trainers.

Please email coffs_coach@bigpond.com with any surplus gear you would like to move on.
