PRESENTATION AND GALA DINNER
It gives us great pleasure and pride to announce that Craig Alexander will be our guest speaker for our Presentation and Gala Dinner to be held at the C.ex Club on Friday 16th May at 7pm.

Craig is without doubt one of Australia’s most accomplished athletes. He is a three time World Ironman Champion and current race record holder at the brutal Kona course. Just as important, Craig is much admired for his humility and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. It is a huge honour to have someone of Craig’s stature attend our night and we hope as many members as possible will attend.

Tickets are $50.00 per person and juniors $20.00, to secure your seat please EFT the amount with your name into our club BCU bank account BSB 704328 Account number 197693 (S11 if you are transferring from another BCU account).
The night includes a two course meal, award presentations, induction of life members, the return of the “Cliffy” awards honouring those members who have done the more unforgettable things throughout the season, the opportunity to listen to perhaps Australia’s greatest ever triathlete and if you have the energy a DJ to show off your dance moves. Dress is smart casual and the night is open to members and former members, their partners and family. Please don’t delay in reserving your ticket as the night will surely be sold out.

RULE OF THE WEEK
This is an interesting aspect of the rules that most people probably haven’t thought about. I can say from personal experience that 5.5 is often ignored.

Rule 5 – Transition Area Conduct
5.1          A competitor may only have a bare torso when moving from the swim exit to their bicycle rack or moving from their bicycle rack to the swim entry, the latter in a multi swim event.
5.2          A competitor must mount and dismount the bicycle at the respective designated mounting and dismounting zones.
5.3          A competitor must at all times rack his/her own bicycle only at their designated bicycle rack location and leave it in a stable position.
5.4          A competitor must at all times place all their equipment at their designated bicycle rack location.
5.5          A competitor must not interfere with another competitor's equipment but where accidental interference occurs the offending competitor must replace the equipment to its former position and state.

OCEAN SWIM LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AWAY!!
If you haven’t registered already, you only have 10 days to get your name down for the Coffs Ocean Swims on 30th March 2014. Online entries close at 8pm on Friday 28th March, but you can still do a late entry in person at the Yacht Club on Saturday 29th (2 - 4pm) and Sunday 30th (from 6.30am) with a $10 late fee for all events on top of the original event price.

This is a great opportunity to hone your ocean swimming skills and practice sighting, as well as getting used to swimming in a pack, running beach starts and drafting off those more aquatically gifted than yourself. These are all important skills for triathletes.

Anyone who tackled the bcu Coffs Tri wetsuit-free a couple of weeks ago will find this 2km swim a walk in the park. You can take a leisurely swim around the Jetty, kicking as hard as you like, safe in the knowledge that you only need your legs for a brief run up the beach to the finish line.

If you’re not keen on the entire 2km swim, there is always the 600m to get your head wet. And for the kids, there are 150m and 300m swims in between the senior events.

The day will kick off at 8am with the 600m swim. It’s always a great day out. And who knows, you might even win one of the fantastic random prizes.

More details are available on the Village Sports website at http://villagesports.com.au/events/coffs-ocean-swims/.

ROAD SAFETY
We cannot emphasise enough the need for cyclists to take extreme care when out riding, whether during races, in training or for general leisure. Most drivers are cautious and courteous to cyclists, some are outright aggressive and sometimes accidents just happen. But you can never become complacent when out riding.

This became all the more evident over the past couple of weeks with two accidents in the same place at the intersection of Mastracolas Rd and the highway off ramp. There was also a nasty accident in Sydney involving 6 cyclists and one car.  All these incidents highlight the need to be vigilant, even when riding in packs. As Peter Woods always says “remember that all the cars want to kill you”. It is up to you to ride defensively and never assume that a car has seen you. No training goal is worth ending up on the wrong side of a vehicle.

The following has been penned by Anne Shearer, Road Safety and Transport Officer at Coffs Harbour Council.

“Just wanted to alert road cyclists to a number of bike crashes that have occurred at the intersection of Mastracolas Road and the Highway off ramp involving cyclists travelling west and vehicles heading in a northerly direction. Police confirmed that the driver involved in the crash this week said he was blinded by the rising sun. Four of the crashes that we know of that occurred at this intersection have been at similar times in the morning and similar circumstances.

Council is investigating appropriate actions to take to alert drivers to the presence of cyclists at this intersection, but in the interim, could you please alert any cyclists you know of that ride in this area to exercise caution at intersections, particularly roundabouts:
  •  ride defensively
  • don’t presume the driver is going to stop
  • take extra care when the sun is behind you.

If in doubt there is always the option of getting off your bike and crossing when there is a gap in the traffic.”

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Preparations and organisation for Club Championships are in full swing. And there are only 2½ weeks until the big day.

Vicki Tillott and other committee members have been working hard to get everything organised and ensure that the weekend runs smoothly and everyone enjoys themselves. And just to help you all along, Vicki has compiled the very handy cheat sheet that is attached to this newsletter.

Thanks Vicki for all your work!
