19/8/2014 0 Comments WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 19 AUGUST 2014TRIATHLON HISTORY IN OUR MIDST We have lots of talent, both overt and hidden amongst our club members. But many of you may not know that our own CHTC Life Member John Daffy was instrumental in developing the first triathlon wetsuit. The history of triathlon and the development of the triathlon wetsuit is a very interesting one. Its evolution is a testament to the dedication, fitness and downright hard-core of those involved in triathlon in its early days. Makes us all look so soft with our carbon bikes, high-tech wetsuits and array of running shoes. See the link below and next time you’re floating out there like a cork, warm and comfortable in your wetsuit, save a thank you to our own JD for his contribution. http://trihistory.com/features/danny-boy-and-rubber-suit-brigade#/2 MULTISPORT DREAMING
Jane Hunt is a triathlon historian from Bond University and has produced perhaps the first documented and photographed history of Triathlon in Australia. The club will be organising a bulk order at the special rate of $40.00 per book. See the attached flyer for details of the book. If you’re interested, Michael Dougherty will be coordinating the book order so send him an email at [email protected] to get your copy. ON THE TOPIC OF WETSUITS Shark attack is something we all fear when we’re swimming in open water. Some of us can rationalise it away, others have a morbid fear and avoid open water swimming all together. Most of just try not to think about it. Well, a clever combination of science and design has come up with a possible solution. Actually two possible solutions. By studying the behaviour of sharks and other underwater life forms, an Australian ocean swimmer Hamish Jolley and a team of scientists have developed two wetsuits designed to prevent shark attacks. And it’s not what you would think. Jolley gave a TED talk in Perth in October 2013 outlining his designs and the science behind it. This is fascinating insight not only into the behaviour of sharks, but also the clever methods involved in devising a solution to minimise shark attacks on humans. This is well worth watching. And we all know it pays to be careful about what goes into our most important piece of equipment. To paraphrase the old adage, you don’t power a performance engine with dirty fuel. Most of us apply the principles of clean eating to our everyday nutrition, but have you ever read the list of ingredients in some of the most commonly used gels and sports drinks? Making your own sports supplements using everyday, natural ingredients isn’t as complicated as you might think. Here are some recipes for electrolyte drinks. The instructions for each is the same – just blend all the ingredients together and enjoy! Save yourself a DQ by ensuring you know these basic run rules. Rule 4 - Run Conduct 4.1 A competitor may not crawl. 4.2 A competitor may not run with a bare torso or without shoes on any part of the run course of an event. 4.3 A competitor must clearly display the race identification number on their front at all times on the run course if provided by the Race Director. Those not complying may incur a Stop-Start penalty. However if the Technical Official considers that the identification number has been unintentionally lost, then the competitor will not be penalised. CHTC CLASSIFIEDS
