EVEN MORE PERFECT
It wasn’t just starting in the light that made Sunday’s race one of the best of the year, it was the beautiful, warm water with smooth waves gently helping us back to shore. It was also the slightly lower temperatures, relative lack of humidity combined with just enough breeze to keep things cool when it was heating up that helped so many of us cross the line looking fit, strong and ready to take on Club Champs!

Although it was a little tricky trying to find that last buoy when swimming into the glaring sun, you just had to follow the splashes ahead to find your way there and then head home. Kudos to the scratch starters who had to navigate without the benefit of following those ahead!

Then onto the bike, with barely a breath of wind to impede those increasingly fast times. While there was a fair bit of traffic on the roads and around the Jetty, everyone was courteous to drivers and largely kept to the rules of both the road the triathlon.
On the run the lower humidity made for a much more comfortable run and there were some slick times and considerably less red faces. While there was no-one under the hour, with most of the faster racers off strutting their stuff elsewhere, those that took line honours put in impressive performances. Jack McPhee was first home in 1:02:21 followed by a very comfortable looking Isiah Koopmans in 1:03:31. Glen Price was third in 1:04:21 and just never seems to get any slower. Sarah Marsden was first female in 1:08:24, closely followed by Alison Howle in 1:08:31. Kate Marsden capped off the 1:08 trifecta in 1:08:54.

It was great to see Jo Magill out and racing the long course again, and Charles Barnes once again conquered the full distance. It was Kristen Pigram’s turn to race this week and she looked comfortable throughout the race. Ian and Phoenix cheered from the sides, with Phoenix giving out high fives on the Jetty to keep us all motivated.

The results of consistent training are starting to show for Jan Rooney who put in a solid bike leg (and not even in cleats!) followed by a killer run leg. Reuben van Wyngaardt, Jukka Ylinen & Chris Rowthorne show no signs of slowing down and have all had a fantastic season.

We only have one more race in the conventional format, then the long course race to get us ready for Club Champs.

Happy training everyone!

Tickets for the bash are $30 and we need to know numbers by 8th May. So please RSVP to Karen by email at [email protected]. You can deposit your payment into the CHTC bank account, using your last name as the reference.

CYCLING MADNESS
Next time you’re stuck at the railway crossing during our club race, ponder on the following video.

The Paris-Roubaix cycle race in France involves crossing a very much in-use level railway crossing. What happens when you have several hundred eager cyclists, all riding at ridiculously high speeds and not wanting to lose the pack, and they come up against a railways crossing that is lowering its bars in readiness for an oncoming train?

You get this:

And for the record, this is not the first time this has happened. Check out this video from the 1937 Paris-Nice jumping over the gates to avoid an oncoming train.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!

WISE WORDS
"It's important to know that, at the end of the day, it's not the medals you remember. What you remember is the process - what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands - those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish twelfth or you're an Olympic champion." - Silken Laumann (Canadian Champion Rower)
