12/11/2014 0 Comments weekly newsletter 11 November 2014TRIPLE SPRINT RACE REPORT Our run of great weather continued on Sunday for the club’s annual sprint race with another classic morning greeting competitors. With handicaps being thrown out for the race, some extremely close and competitive racing took place. Zoe Burgess pushed Kate Marsden over the first two laps before retiring (no doubt off to study for exams) and leaving Kate to again take line honours in the women’s division. Joe Kane must have thought he was being chased by father time but it was rather Woopi teenagers Sam Bourke and Isaiah Koopmans nipping at his heels. Joe’s experience eventually prevailed but our junior stocks are looking the most promising for many years. Welcome back to Glen Price who returned to club racing after a few years off. For those who don’t know Glen in his formative years was one of our region’s best cyclists who had a few years in Europe competing and acting as a mechanic for top professional teams in Europe. These days you can find him at club Sponsor Rainbow Cycles plying his trade. Well done also to Jo Lawler, Pete Timothy, Lois Oliver, Dave Bowen and Clare Judd who among others are getting their seasons happening as the weather warms up. Those who competed or who have competed in this event will know how difficult it is to negative split the three lap course. While no one was able to negative split the first, second and third laps consecutively honourable mentions go to Scott Tarplee, Sian Bignill, Mark Mclaughlin, Jan Rooney, Holly Newton, Ian Nash, Renae Smidt and Caron Mackie who were very consistent in their lap times. And if you thought your morning was busy spare a thought for our Committee member and Policeman Mark Griffiths who was there at 5.30 am to organise the course setup, completed all three laps despite cutting his foot on the sand and then received an emergency call to attend work soon after finishing. Well done Griffo!
Our next race is in two weeks on 23rd November, so until then train safe and stay healthy. DEB'S MARATHON DEBUT IN NEW YORK By Deb Tennant Woke at 4 a.m. too excited to sleep. It was freezing, 2 degrees & winds up to 50km/h. At 5:45 a.m. Travelling Fit transported us (500 Australian runners) to the start line on Staten Island. We arrived at 7:30 a.m. I was wearing a ski jacket with the primary objective was to stay warm until the gun went at 10:55am. It was a surreal scene. Runners huddled in blankets, chatting, some more than others, lots of shivering, but mostly a sea of smiles & concern. In true Aussie spirit I made many friends. It was time. I hesitantly shed my ski jacket to the homeless & I was off running over the Verrazano -Narrows Bridge. It was a battle to stay grounded, the wind was so fierce it tore the space blanket from my neck & then my hat was gone. My tactic was to draft behind a big guy. Dumb idea! Not many big guys do marathons. I was on my own, wishing I was 10kg heavier. Over the bridge, I settled into a comfortable rhythm, I felt strong. I was soaking up the atmosphere as I ran through Brooklyn & Queens. The streets were pumping with excitement, music, cheer. It was electrifying. At each 10km mark I was yelling "Happy birthday Helen" as promised to an old school friend. At 25km, crossing the Queensboro Bridge from Queens to Manhattan the wind was that strong I was hardly moving. At 26km my right calf began to cramp. I was forced to a shuffle. I tried some banana, it helped a little. The pain was excruciating with every step. I was taking anything and everything from the volunteers & supporters; oranges, Gatorade, biscuits, "Go Deb", "I love Aussies", "I love Australia", "You are doing it". I even ran backwards in an attempt to ease the cramping; desperate measures. I dug deep & just kept on running through the Bronx & Central Park; which were a blur. Unfortunately the "Happy birthday Helen" chants got fainter. I am proud to say I achieved my goal to run across the finish line smiling. I am now a very humble marathon runner who misses her toenail. At least I will save on pedicures! TRIATHLON NIRVANA An 1100 acre triathlon nirvana is being constructed near Wilmington, North Carolina in the USA. It will be a permanent training facility and will have enviable features such as a 25 acre lake for open water swimming, a permanent transition area, a 22.5km paved bike loop and a 10.5km traffic-free run course. Intended for training camps and clinics, the facility will be also host triathlon races as well as other events such as kayak races and open water swims. Check it out at http://www.trihabitat.com/.
