Weekly NEWSLETTER 10 sEPTEMBER 2013

GAME ON
You really couldn’t have asked for better conditions for the first race of the season. 129 CHTC members descended on the Jetty to race in the near-perfect conditions over both distances. Many were racing for the first time, and there were plenty of familiar faces.

Times were a little slower than previous seasons. This was mainly due to the slightly extended run course, which is now a very accurate 5km thanks to the efforts of Dave Moffatt. However Richard Pearson and Christine Lefeaux still managed to post some pretty slick times to take out fastest male and female. There were plenty of fast times, with 11 racers coming in under 70mins and 27 between 70 and 80 mins. Keep an eye on the likes of newcomers Reuben van Wyngaardt and Ian Swanborough. Something tells me we will see rapid improvement from them both. And it also won’t take long for all the work that Vicki Tillot, Judy Chesney and Isobella Bowes put in to see some solid results. Bets are on that the most interesting battles will be waged at the not-so-pointy end of the field.
It was great to see some people returning to the sport, such as Kate Marsden who is returning after a 7 year hiatus. I’m sure it won’t take long for Kate to return to peak form.

The short course also attracted a large number of participants with 43 taking the field. Tim Martin and Brianna Mooney were neck and neck with only 13s between their times. Sam Burke and Jake Saunders weren’t far behind. There were lots of new members trying out this distance. Welcome to you all.

Finally, a big thanks to the volunteers and committee members who helped the day run so smoothly.

THANKS FOR THE BIG WELCOME
We know that we are one of the best clubs in the area, not to mention the friendliest and most welcoming triathlon club in NSW. But it’s nice to have that recognised by others.

Kate Callaghan raced for the first time on the weekend and took the time to pen this thank you to all CHTC members for making it such a positive experience for her.

“I just wanted to say a HUGE thankyou to everyone at yesterday’s club triathlon (officials, competitors and spectators).

My girlfriend and I competed in our very first tri (to celebrate her 40th) and are still on a high today!  We are in awe of how friendly and helpful everyone was and we were made to feel welcome from the minute we arrived.

I have been associated with a number of sporting clubs over the years (between my husband, myself and our 4 children), in many different sports and locations, and without a doubt, Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club is miles ahead in terms of organisation and friendliness.

I know how hard a committee works to make everything run smoothly and often it is a thankless and tireless job, however you should all be congratulated on the awesome club you have.

I cannot thank you enough and we will be back for sure.

Kind regards
Kate.”

Thanks for taking the time to write Kate and we’re so pleased you enjoyed yourself so much. We hope to see you and your friend on the course again soon.

NEW WEBSITE
While we are in the business of saying thank you, kudos needs to be given to Hadley and Sinclair Black and David Leckenby for the work they have done to revamp the CHTC website.

The new site is easy to use, with great maps of the course plus a photo gallery and the usual links to the Dutyman roster and results pages. Take the time to check it out at www.coffstri.com.

Thanks very much to the web team for the time and effort. Great job!

CLUB UNIFORMS
Michelle Clarke will be placing an order for club uniforms shortly. If anyone would like to place an order or see some samples, please contact Michelle via email at shellclarke88@gmail.com.

THEY’RE PLAYING MY SONG…
Most people have a song that motivates them or pumps them up ready for a race. To help cater to personal tastes and boost the race day vibe, we are putting together a playlist of songs to be played during club races.

To add your song to the Club playlist, please send an email to coffstrinews@gmail.com with your name, the title of the song and the artist. You may need to provide an MP3 if it’s not already in the compiler’s song library.

Please send only one song per person. For families, it’s OK to nominate a family song or one song per family member that is also a CHTC member. While it can’t guaranteed that you will hear your song on race day, every effort will be made to ensure the songs are played on a fair rotation.

SALT MULTISPORT FESTIVAL
Emma Sutton and Lyndal Green were the lucky CHTC members who grabbed the free entries to the Salt Multisport Festival in Kingscliff on the weekend. The race was a “broken triathlon”, with the 3 disciplines being raced over 2 days. The Festival incorporated both sprint and Olympic distance races. Lyndal Green provided the following race report.

“A small but hardy group of Coffs Harbour Triathlon trihards hit the road for a race in beautiful Kingscliff. It was the inaugural Salt Multisport Festival. The Stubbs family was well represented, with all members competing in every event. Team Blondie, aka Emma Sutton and Lyndal Green, also represented in each discipline. The format was an Olympic distance or Sprint distance triathlon with a lovely little break in between each race. This however proved to be not so great for the final run leg, due to lack of energy after smashing out a very hard bike and swim the day before!

The Bike was first up on Saturday morning with the 20 km starting on a very windy testing course. Michelle and Aaron Stubbs both had a great race. The Olympic then went off and after a rolling start (where Lyndal was heard to say to Emma it's like we are in the "Tour" Love). The wind was a factor from the outset, although with drafting being allowed it helped a little. The course was very hilly which meant some fast descents with one member of the Coffs team taking a slight detour around one turn and losing a little bark!! All members were glad to cross the line. Tenielle won the race in the women's category, and Lyndal and Emma placed first and second in their age group. Michael Stubbs finished 3rd.

After a break of a few hours, the 1.5km swim was held in Cudgen Creek. Due to the low tide the swim was put forward 30 mins with one family doing a "Stubbsy" and missing the start. But they were allowed to race the longer distance whilst the 750m was on. It was a good swim, water temperature was comfortable and some opted out of wetsuits.  All members fared well in results and some scooped some great random draw prizes.

The next morning saw the running of the 10kms and 5km. With heavy legs from the day before the run was always going to be a test of will. The 10 km was a two lap course with the second lap being hot and windy, but thankfully flat! In the end all members were pleased to finish with some good times for all 3 races.

With the format being a Time Trial for each race you certainly went harder than if you had to combine the three. Overall it was an enjoyable race and the venue was hard to beat.

Final results with combined times in the Olympic distance were first placings in respective age groups to Tenielle Stubbs and Lyndal Green and a hard fought second in age group for Emma Sutton. One to put on the calendar for next year to gauge where you are at for the season.”

 UPCOMING TRAVELS
Next weekend will see several club members travelling to races out of the area:
  • Reece Edwards will compete in the 2013 Age Group World Championships in London in the 20-24 age group category on Sunday 15 September. This race will follow much of the spectator-friendly route from the 2012 London Olympics. No doubt this will be a hard fought race, with a spectacular location and a great crowd. Results will be available on http://worldtrilondon.com/ after the race. Good luck Reece!
  • Several CHTC athletes will be travelling to the sold out Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast on Sunday 15th September. Best of luck to those competing. We will be watching the results on http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/asiapac/ironman-70.3/sunshine-coast.aspx#axzz2eOFpA8q1.
