bcu COFFS TRI
What a day! Once again, the weather came to the party and the rain showers stayed away for the big event on Sunday. The increasing heat made things harder on the run, and we were lucky that the winds and thunder storms stayed away until later in the afternoon. How good was it to race in our own backyard?

CHTC was well-represented in all age groups and in both the Enticer and Olympic distances. There were also plenty of mini-CHTC members in the Enticer and also the kids’ races on Saturday. Jump online to Facebook and look for Nashy’s Pix. Nashy has once excelled himself with his photo coverage of the race and there are some great shots that you can purchase. Village Sports also has some great shots from both days.

We had an almost-full moon to set up our space in the crowded transition areas. As the sun rose over the Jetty, the Enticer racers took off. It was a close field at the pointy end, with Isiah Koopmans, Glen Price, Sam Burke, Glen George and Matthew Marsden all finishing within 4 minutes of eachother. Congratulations to Isiah for taking out the race. Looks like whatever lessons he needed to learn at All Schools were well and truly put into place on Sunday. The top 4 female finishers were also Coffs locals, with Chloe Bulloch showing some good genes and a strong future in triathlon with her first place finish. Alison Tarplee, Joanne Ferguson and Elora Croaker were all not far behind. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Enticer, especially those taking on their first triathlon.
The main event was hotly contested by the race favourites Richard Pearson, Lindsey Wall and Clayton Fettell. Richard and Lindsey were neck and neck most of the way, with Lindsey just managing to cross the line before Richard by 40s and setting a new course record in the process. Well done again to Richard for taking out 2nd place. Rachael Paxton had a convincing win in the women’s race, but it was great to see CHTC member Lyndal Green take 3rd place overall.  A fantastic result.

Further down the results list there were too many CHTC members to mention. Full results are available HERE.  There were so many CHTC members on the podium in their age groups and even more setting personal bests, overcoming various adversities and personal challenges to cross the finish line. Congratulations to each and every one of you.

A massive shout out and thanks to Mick, Sinclair, Hadley and the team at Village Sports. It was a fantastic day and we can’t wait until next year.

THANK YOU FROM VILLAGE SPORTS
Village Sports would like to extend a huge thank you to all the Coffs Tri Club members for competing, volunteering and supporting the bcu Coffs Tri over the weekend. It was fantastic seeing so many familiar, smiling faces cheering on the other competitors, taking part and helping out.

The event would not have been the success it was without the support of our wonderful members. A special thanks must go to those who stayed on after their race on Sunday - in the heat - to pack up tents, carry tables, pick up rubbish, etc.

Triathlons around the world, from small community events right through to the Kona World Champs would not happen without the help of volunteers, and we appreciate every bit of support from our club members. The bcu Coffs Tri is growing each year which is great for our sport, our community and our local economy.

Thanks again,
Sinclair, Mick and Hadley.

SAM IS OFF TO NATIONAL TITLES
Picture
Some of our juniors at the NSW All Schools Triathlon Championships

Remember this photo from last week? And remember that Zoe Burgess and Sam Burke both made the top 10 in their respective categories and will be reserves for the State Team for the National Titles.

Well, the young man in the cap and blue RETRO tri top (Sam Burke) has been called up to the National Titles in April. That is fantastic news Sam. We can’t wait to see how you go Sam and look forward to hearing all about it.

IRONMAN NZ RACE REPORT – LAKE TAUPO 7th March 2015
A great destination for my first (significant Birthday) Ironman. Lee Varney with wife Rebecca  supplied familiar faces and filled me in on some local knowledge.

The day started perfectly - cool, overcast with a forecast of some rain and afternoon wind – great racing weather for me.

I was so nervous going into the swim that I was in danger of fogging my goggles as I got all teary. The swim was magnificent – just comfortably cool and flat in the beautiful and crystal clear water of Lake Taupo. I could have bobbed around all day but apparently that’s not the point.

On the bike leg the rain held off and was overcast with just a few patches of sun. Rain jacket went on – ran jacket came off.

The ride is out and back twice - gentle undulations with just enough downhills to make it fun. Why coast downhill when you can really hammer it? Around is scenic countryside – thermal steam rising surreally from the fields and lending their sulphur odour, blue grey hills rising up in the distance and sweetly scented pine plantations up close. The wind picked up a little on the last bike lap, slowing things down riding into it and then it was a fight to stay upright as it changed and came in from the side.

The rain started to come down in the run leg with an intermittent cooling drizzle. OK by me - ponchos went on, ponchos came off.

I saw Lee sitting in a tent wrapped in a thermal blanket, unfortunately unable to continue due to cramping and illness but encouraging me on nonetheless.

The run is an undulating course around the shores of Lake Taupo – 3 laps. It became a bit challenging for me as night set in and the irregular and sometimes poorly lit brick pathway challenged my tired legs and struggling night vision. (I have been known to fall flat on my face).

The support was fantastic from the locals who stayed for the whole race standing out in rain and drizzle and cheering the participants.  We had accommodation right on the run course at about the 5km mark and my husband Chris was able to give encouraging kisses and cuddles each time I ran out and again on the way back. It was a great bonus and something to look forward to as I slugged out the kms.

My strategy was slow “dog exercising jog” and walk through the aid stations. Something I thought could sustain for the 42km. Nearing the finish line I could feel my legs turning to jelly and my stomach churning from a chocolate Gu I had tried to force down, but damned if  was going to walk!

The finish - Success – and better than I thought I could do – the Gods had been kind and turned on the best weather for me.

Unfortunately I couldn’t stomach anything of the feast laid on in the recovery tent and needed to get under a hot shower (sitting on a chair mind you) before hyperthermia set in. Then onto the internet to bask in my glory J.

HEATMAP
Want to be either fascinated by the technology or freaked out by just how much information about us is out there in cyberspace? Either way, you can help but find the Strava Heatmap interesting viewing. Also handy if you’re ever travelling somewhere and want to know where the good/popular ride or run routes are.

Basically, if you’ve ever uploaded your data to Strava then you’ve contributed to this map. Check it out at http://labs.strava.com/heatmap/#5/155.97847/-30.84413/blue/run.
