About 50 people took part in the Hiawatha Half in Wooli on the weekend. Conditions were typical for Wooli – clear & smooth water for the swim, dappled shade and a mostly flat course out to Minnie Water followed by a hot run that was occasionally broken by a slight breeze. The course was set at a 2.4km swim in the Wooli River, up to 3 x 30km laps of the bike course and up to 20km of running on bitumen followed by a corrugated dirt road out to Diggers Camp.
The swim course was in clear water with a little weed on the riverbed. The oyster beds and other submerged objects were somewhat hazardous and caused a few battle wounds, but were mostly avoided and made for some interesting post-race tales. For those who caught the current, it was a swift, smooth swim to T1.
Riding out to Minnie Water and back was pleasantly cool in the early morning with the temperatures only climbing towards the back end of the ride. There was only one hill of significance, but it tested the legs on the way up and rewarded on the way down. As it was a 3-lap in & out course, this hill had to be addressed 6 times for those doing the full 90km. The smiles, waves and friendly banter decreased with each ascent.
The run out to Diggers Camp was a mixed bag of hot running on the bitumen, dappled shade on dirt road, blazing sun and dust. Lake Hiawatha provided a welcome cooling point for those feeling the heat.
No-one could say it’s not an attractive course. The combination of the pristine river (the 2nd cleanest river in NSW according to NPWS) and quiet country roads with great scenery made this a fantastic place to have a triathlon.
Rod Jozeps was the first home over the full course and looked strong throughout the entire event. Jon Waites and Mark Griffiths were not long after. The entire group of participants looked strong, fit and determined. Congratulations to everyone who participated on a tough, but fun, course. It was a fantastic, friendly and supportive atmosphere that gave valuable experience to the novices amongst us, and a perfect training session for those targeting longer distance events.
A huge thanks to Steel & Lyn for organising the event. We look forward to doing it all again next year.
RULE OF THE WEEK
Running conduct rules are fairly straight forward. There are only three items in Section 4 – Running Conduct. Here they are:
Rule 4 – Running Conduct
4.1 A competitor may not crawl.
4.2 A competitor may not run with a bare torso or without shoes on any part of the run course of an event.
4.3 A competitor must clearly display the race identification number on their front at all times on the run course if provided by the Race Director. Those not complying may incur a Stop-Start penalty. However if the Technical Official considers that the identification number has been unintentionally lost, then the competitor will not be penalised.
NSW CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014
So far almost half of our 300+ membership has entered this year’s Club Championships at Forster on 5th April. We have 10 volunteers also registered. A big thank you to everyone who has signed up so far.
The event has been a tradition in the club for many years and is a great weekend to race and bond with your fellow CHTC members. Our Club has enjoyed great success over the years. We have been awarded the Champion Country Club around 10 times. However this year our sights are set a little higher. This year we are in Division 1 and are competing with the likes of Bondi Running & Triathlon Club (BRATS), Balance & UTS Triathlon Club and Panthers Triathlon Club. These clubs always have huge numbers attending and volunteering and therefore score well in the points system. We have nearly 120 members travelling down as volunteers and competitors and believe we can really give the city clubs a run for their money in the big one. Every entry counts!

WEDNESDAY SPEED SQUAD
Wednesday night speed swim sets will recommence in the 25m pool from next Wednesday night at 6pm at Coffs Olympic Pool.
Structured differently, they are fast efforts with a long rest cycle. The objective is to elevate baseline speed through high intensity repeats. There will only be a total distance of between 1000-1400m each week, with lanes allocated differently to the usual process. The fastest swimmers lead each lane, next fastest follow, etc.

Unfortunately Tracie Paton has not been unable to gain entry to the Trial Bay Triathlon (despite pleading with the race organisers – we feel your pain Tracie).
Also unfortunately, she had already booked accommodation in South West Rocks at the Rockpool Motel for the Saturday night.

Emma Moffatt once again demonstrated that she is one of triathlon’s stars by taking out the women’s race at Ironman Geelong 70.3 on Sunday. Not only did she smash the women’s field by an incredible 13 minutes, she came 10th overall in a very classy field of professional triathletes.
Taking the lead from the outset, Emma dominated in the swim, bike and run and stormed home in her first win at this distance. Her focus will now turn to competing in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July.
CHTC congratulates Emma on this superb victory and look forward to cheering her along at the Games.
